history
In the 1870s there were extensive ranches in the area where the town is today . In 1879, the settler CV Bailey built a log cabin with his three sons, which they used as a post office, shop and home. Several other settlers followed. The place was initially called Frontier .
In 1881 the construction of the railway reached the place. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad railroad set up a depot and loading facilities in Frontier on the new connection to Denver . The land on which the railway company was building belonged to Mary Stratton at the time. She gave her ownership rights to the railroad, in return the place was renamed Stratton . The settlement continued to grow due to the railway. A first school was built in 1881/82 and various shops were opened. On January 14, 1886, Stratton was integrated into Hitchcock County, which had existed since 1873.
In May and June of 1935, the Republican River, which ran immediately south of Stratton, caused considerable flooding in the town. Several residents died, in addition to many buildings, parts of the railway line, roads and bridges were damaged or destroyed.
