Stylianos Alexiou

Stylianos Eleftheriou Alexiou ( Greek Στυλιανός Ελευθερίου Αλεξίου ; born February 13, 1921 in Heraklion , Crete ; † November 12, 2013 ibid) was a Greek classical archaeologist , neo-Greekist and Byzantinist .

Life

After attending school, Alexiou completed a degree in Classical Archeology and Central and Modern Greek Philology . From 1962 to 1977 he was director of the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion and Ephoros of Antiquity ( Γενικός Έφορος Αρχαιοτήτων ). From 1977 until his retirement in 1991 he held a full professorship for Classical Archeology at the University of Crete , founded in 1973 .

Alexiou was a corresponding member of the Academy of Athens , a member of the Athens Archaeological Society and a full member of the German Archaeological Institute . He received honorary doctorates from the universities of Padua , Athens and Cyprus .

Research priorities

Alexiou discovered the late Minoan tombs of the port of Knossos and the early Minoan Tholos tombs of life (Λεβήν) near today's Lendas (Λέντας Ηρακλείου). In addition to expanding the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, he founded the museums of Chania and Agios Nikolaos . His publications cover the entire spectrum of archaeological topics related to Minoan and Archaic culture , including the bull leaping . His main work Das antike Kreta (1967) was also published in English , French and Italian translation .

As Neogräzist he was mainly involved in the literature of the Cretan Renaissance, so the dream narrative Apokopos , the verse romance Erotokritos of Vitsentzos Kornaros and Hirtenidyll Βοσκοπούλα ( Voskopúla ), but also with the Byzantine epic Digenis Akritas and the poet of the Greek War of Independence, Dionysios Solomos .
