The Superstar Gemini is a cruise ship operated by the Star Cruises shipping company . It was built as Dreamward in 1992 and lengthened by 40 meters in 1998 and renamed Norwegian Dream . In 2012 the ship was named SuperStar Gemini . Sister ship is the SuperStar Aquarius .

history

The Dreamward was completed on December 6, 1992 in France at Chantiers de l'Atlantique and delivered to Cruise Monastery on November 4, 1992 . The ship then cost $ 240 million. It was 190 m long, 28.50 m wide and had a draft of a good 7.0 m. The ship was used by the shipping company in the Caribbean, around Australia and New Zealand and in Europe.

In March 1998 the Dreamward came to the Lloyd shipyard in Bremerhaven. Here she met her sister ship, Norwegian Wind , which has already been extended. Within 60 days, the Dreamward became the Norwegian Dream until May . The ship was cut open in the middle and lengthened by 40 m to 230 m. The work was documented by ARTE in a film broadcast on January 19, 1999. On May 12, 1998 the ship got its new name and transferred to Norwegian Cruise Line.

From May 14, 1998, Norwegian Dream sailed the Kiel Canal every 12 days in summer . The maximum usable length of the canal locks is 235 meters, five meters more than the dimensions of the ship. In order not to exceed the clearance height of the bridges, the chimney was hydraulically folded down before the canal passage began.

Norwegian Cruise Line sold the ship to Louise Cruise Lines on April 23, 2008. On October 4th, Louise Cruise Lines canceled the purchase. The ship has since been up for sale again. The last trip under the NCL flag ended on November 2, 2008 in Boston .

On November 5, 2008, the ship ran out to be laid up in Freeport in the Bahamas for two months . On April 17, 2009 the Norwegian Dream left Freeport and reached the port of Gibraltar on April 26, 2009 . From September 2009 it was launched off the Cycladic island of Syros . In May 2011, the ship sailed to Singapore, where it was spotted in a shipyard in June.

At the end of April 2012 it was announced that the Norwegian Dream will be put into service after its renovation for the parent company Star Cruises. On August 28, 2012, the ship was renamed SuperStar Gemini in the port of Pulau Pinang (Malaysia) . The name change was made on a small scale on the shipping company's own pier of Star Cruises. Then the ship was in the shipyard hauled , where it was rebuilt and renovated. The ship has been used on new routes in Asia since 2013.

Incidents

Collision with the Ever Decent

On August 24, 1999, the Norwegian Dream rammed the Taiwanese container freighter Ever Decent in the English Channel at night . There were no serious injuries, but damage amounting to millions. After the accident, the Norwegian Dream was repaired at the Lloyd shipyard in Bremerhaven.

More incidents

On July 25, 2001, the Norwegian Dream rammed a dent in the stern while maneuvering in the port of Copenhagen . There was no major damage to property.

In March 2002 the Norwegian Dream lost its loading hatch in the port of Valparaíso . The hatch had to be salvaged by divers. After a brief inspection of the hatch, it was able to be reattached and the ship left an hour late.

On August 15, 2003, the Norwegian Dream was pushed into the dolphins by the wind in the Schülp switch (passing point in the Kiel Canal) . One of the two propellers was damaged. Two inspectors appeared in the Holtenau lock to assess the damage. After an almost three hour lay time in the lock, the Norwegian Dream set sail for Tallinn , where the damage was repaired during the regular lay time.

On December 10, 2007, on the voyage from Buenos Aires to Valparaíso, the Norwegian Dream collided with a cargo barge in the port of Montevideo and was slightly damaged at the bow above the waterline. The damage was repaired within three days. With the consent of the local authorities in Montevideo, the master disembarked to help clear up the incident. He was able to be replaced by the captain of the Marco Polo , which was also in port, as he was on vacation. On the way to Cape Horn , the machine suffered a brief blackout, which could be remedied by restarting the system. In the course of the voyage, the staff captain took command and held it until February 2008.
