During the settlement of the area around Brod , silver veins were discovered that attracted miners to the area. The Heiligenkreuz settlement was founded around 1300 by the Teutonic Order . After the Swedes plundered the town of Deutschbrod and the silver mines near Heiligenkreuz during the Thirty Years' War in 1639 and 1645, the mining operations were weak. When the pits were flooded, silver mining finally came to a standstill. In 1712 the Deutschbroder dean Johann Seidl had a branch church built on the site of the chapel destroyed by the Hussites.
