Svatý Kříž (German Holy Cross ) is a settlement of the city of Cheb in the Czech Republic. It is located four kilometers south of the city center of Cheb on the cadastre of Háje u Chebu in Okres Cheb .

Geographical location

Svatý Kříž is located near the German border on a plateau on the edge of the Smrčiny Nature Park in the Fichtel Mountains . The Svatokřížský les forest stretches to the west and the Slapanský les to the southeast . The brook Břehnický potok rises in Svatý Kříž, northeast of the Hájský potok. In the north rises the Rovinka ( Rödlhöhe , 523 m), south of the U Lomu (515 m), in the southwest of the Nachtbühl (515 m) and the Pískoviště (516 m) and west of the U Rozcestí (541 m). State road II / 214 between Cheb and Waldsassen runs through Svatý Kříž .

history

The infirmary on Heiligenkreuz, which belongs to the city of Eger , has been traceable since the end of the 13th century. It was used to house lepers and was built far from the city on the edge of the Heiligenkreuz Forest because of the fear of infection. The Heiligkreuzkirche also belonged to the complex. The infirmary also owned the infirmary in Wies . A hunter's house was built in Heiligenkreuz in the 18th century.

After the abolition of patrimonial , from 1850 on, Heiligenkreuz formed a district of the Gehaag municipality in the district and judicial district of Eger . The parish was Wies . Between 1875 and 1905 the old infirmary was used as an orphanage. In 1905 the city of Eger had a new orphanage built in Wies, the infirmary and the church in Heiligenkreuz were demolished. There was an inn on the important road from Eger to Waldsassen. After the Munich Agreement , the village was added to the German Reich in 1938 and belonged to the district of Eger until 1945 . After the end of World War II , Heiligenkreuz returned to Czechoslovakia and the German-speaking residents were expelled . The road connection to Waldsassen was closed in 1948. In 1951, the 10th unit of the 5th brigade of the border guard was stationed in Svatý Kříž . Svatý Kříž was incorporated into Cheb in 1976 together with Háje. After the fall of the Iron Curtain , the border crossing to Waldsassen was reopened in 1990. The border guard barracks were closed in the 1990s and numerous facilities for shopping tourists were built in Svatý Kříž .

  • Memorial for the victims on the Iron Curtain ( Památník obětem železné opony ), southwest of Svatý Kříž on the road to Waldsassen. It was designed by the sculptor Antonín Kašpar and the architect Jaroslav Šusta on behalf of the city of Cheb and unveiled on June 27, 2006.
