Promenade in central Sydney |
Sydney ( Gael. Baile Shidni ) is a formerly independent city in Nova Scotia , Canada . It has been part of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality since August 1, 1995 .
Around 30,000 people live in Sydney. In the greater Sydney area there are approx. 38,000 inhabitants. Following the closure of the Sydney Steel Corporation steel mill and the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC, also known as DEVCO) coal mines , the region is on the way to reorienting itself towards energy, the environment and tourism. Call centers have also been set up south of the city center in order to stop some of the population emigration.
The city also receives new impetus from the 50–60 passenger ships that dock at the newly built pier every year, bringing tens of thousands of tourists to the region.
