Synagogue (Rhineland-Palatinate)
synagogue

The synagogue in Rülzheim , a local community in the district of Germersheim in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in 1832/33. It is located at Kuntzengasse 3–5 and is a protected cultural monument .

history

In Rülzheim one of the largest Jewish communities in the southern Palatinate existed until the " Wagner-Bürckel-Aktion " in 1940 and the community had already built a synagogue around 1750. In 1832/33 the Jewish community in Rülzheim had a new synagogue built by the well-known architect August von Voit . He also designed the plans for the synagogues in Herxheim , Ingenheim , Kallstadt , Kirchheimbolanden and Speyer .

architecture

The synagogue in Rülzheim is a late classical hall building with a flat gable roof . At the entrance there is an architrave with the Hebrew portal inscription : Open the gates so that a righteous people can move in and keep the faithful ( Isaiah 26: 2). The sculpting and painting work was carried out by the Clausonet family of artists from Landau . At the end of the 19th century, the building was expanded with the portal porch and redesigned inside, with parts of the interior fittings designed by August von Voit (e.g. Almemor and Torah shrine ) being removed.

The plastered building facing the street at the gable has a vestibule on the west facade with a large rectangular portal with a double-leaf coffered door . A skylight is embedded in a triangular gable above the portal . In this porch are the stairwells to the right and left of the portal, which led to the women’s gallery on three sides . The cornice of the verge on the west facade is framed by a panel that rises from corner pilasters . The east facade has two arched windows and an architraved window above the Toran niche . There was room for 125 men on the rows of benches in the prayer room and 75 women in the gallery.

time of the nationalsocialism

As part of the November pogroms, the synagogue was desecrated on November 10, 1938 and the windows and interior furnishings were destroyed. All movable objects were stolen or burned in the yard.

Todays use

The synagogue served as a warehouse after 1945 and was finally bought in 1953 by the Rülzheim Catholic parish of the Rheinplatz Jewish community . Now the building was used as a youth home until the 1970s. In 1986 the synagogue was listed and acquired by the political community in 1988. After the renovation work, the building was opened on June 13, 1991 as a history and meeting place. The derelict synagogue served from then on as a cultural event space for concerts, exhibitions, etc. In 2013, the entire area in the center of the village was redesigned. The former synagogue is now part of the “Center for Art and Culture” building ensemble, which opened on May 11, 2014, in which exhibitions, concerts and art courses take place.

Commemoration
