Geographical distribution and occurrence

The species is distributed across southern Europe and the southern part of Central Europe to the Middle East .

Way of life

The diurnal moths fly from June to July. They are particularly active in the sunshine. Very happy then visit the flowers of various plants, such as those of Elderberry ( Sambucus ), thistles ( Cirsium ), Snowball ( Viburnum ), privet ( Ligustrum ) or raspberry ( Rubus idaeus ).

The maggot-shaped caterpillars live one or two years old on the roots of buckthorn ( Frangula alnus ) and Purgier buckthorn ( Rhamnus cathartica ), as well as other woody plants such as Mespilus germanica , Juglans regia , Prunus and Quercus species. In spring the larva builds a characteristic exit tube on the ground.
