The Syria Star was a bulk carrier sailing under the flag of St. Vincent and the Grenadines . The owner and manager of the ship was Sea Rose Maritime from Tartus in Syria . The ship was in 1977 with the hull number 952 on the Japanese shipyard Kurushima Dockyard Co. built.

owner

The ship operated under the name Iris Island for Josco KK in Tokyo until 1986 . Then it was sold and operated as a tramp ship under the name Hollandic Confidence from 1986 to 1998 under the Philippine flag for the Andromeda Shipping Lines, Manila , and then from 1998 to 1999 under the Cypriot flag for the Gondola Navigation Company in Cyprus . This was followed by seven years as Mike M for the Cypriot idyllic location Shipping Co. From 2006 the ship then sailed as Syria Star for Logan Shipholding Co., a subsidiary of Reem Maritime Ltd. (both in Tartus , Syria ) flagged out to St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Average 1999

In early March 1999, the Hollandic Confidence was caught in a severe storm on its way from Vancouver , BC to China with a cargo of 17,000 tons of sulfur and a crew of 23 men. Crusher tore the hatch cover of the front hatch , and spilled into the cargo space . The ship was in distress and sought help from the US Coast Guard on the night of March 3 . Two Coast Guard ships and a Search and Rescue aircraft found the ship off the north coast of California . Although it initially looked as if the Hollandic Confidence was about to sink, it survived two nights and then, when the weather improved, was able to reach San Francisco Bay at slow speed , where it dropped anchor on the night of March 6th . It was too damaged to continue its journey across the Pacific.

Captured on August 5, 2010

On August 5, 2010, the ship with 22 Syrian and two Egyptian sailors on board was captured by Somali pirates . The sugar- laden freighter was at the time of the attack on the western edge of the international shipping corridor.

After the pirates attacked the ship and shot at the crew members, the Syria Star made an emergency call. Helicopters dispatched by the EU mission were unable to contact the crew. They discovered a small pirate boat with ammunition and gas cans on it.

On August 6, 2010, the pirates apparently left the ship voluntarily with one of the lifeboats . From the frigate Schleswig-Holstein , which was in the vicinity, the on-board helicopter transferred a boarding and medical team to the Syria Star at around 7.45 a.m. Central European summer time . The crew had requested medical assistance for two crew members who were wounded in the abduction. When they arrived on the ship, the helpers found a third crew member who had been injured in an accident at work. The injured were cared for and their lives were not in danger.

Observers from the non-governmental organization Ecoterra International in Somalia reported that the pirates abandoned the Syria Star on the night of August 7, 2010 near Boosaaso in Puntland , after the Punic security forces declared that they would attack the hostage-takers in any case. According to these reports, the load of sugar was destined for a wealthy Somaliland businessman who quickly found a solution among the clans .

The End

The ship arrived in May 2011 for scrapping at the scrapping yards near Alang in the Indian state of Gujarat .
