The four sister ships of the Hellespont-Alhambra class are the largest double-hulled oil tankers in the world. With a length of 380 meters and a width of 68 meters, they are 18 meters longer and 2 meters wider than the Symphony of the Seas , the largest passenger ship in the world.
Evolution of the class
The typical ship Hellespont Alhambra of the ULCC tanker series was completed on March 7, 2002 by the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering shipyard in Geoje , South Korea for the Hamburg shipping company Hellespont after 18 months of construction. In 2004 the tanker was bought by the Overseas Shipholding Group and renamed TI Asia and sailed under the Belgian flag under the management of OSG International in New York . Since the end of 2008 the ship has been flying the flag of the Marshall Islands . TI stands for Tankers International , a ship pool for super tankers (VLCC) and (V Plus) tankers.
The TI Asia mostly drove the standard route between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Mexico to the delivery of crude oil to US refineries. When loaded she had to travel around Africa ( Cape of Good Hope ), with ballast she could use the Suez Canal on the return journey and save about ten days of travel time. The tanker can be loaded and unloaded particularly quickly, the new high-performance pumps and lines were installed to minimize berthing costs. Another special feature is the ability to load or delete different products at the same time. A particularly complex pipeline system was installed for this.
The ships are equipped with an inert gas system: an incombustible inert gas obtained from engine exhaust is “bunkered” in the cavities of the double wall , which flows into the holds when the cargo is discharged and suppresses potential ignition by displacing oxygen. In order to keep the warming of the ship to a minimum, the entire hull lying above the water was laid out in a white color that reflects the sunlight, as a higher temperature of the cargo leads to greater evaporation losses.
Conversions to the FSO
In 2009, TI Asia was renamed FSO Asia and converted into a floating storage and transhipment station (FSO) at the Dubai Drydocks shipyard . After the start of trial operations on November 17, 2009 at the Al Shareen oil field off Qatar, problems arose, as a result of which FSO Asia had to return to the conversion yard on December 4.
The sister ship TI Africa , built as the Hellespont Metropolis , was also converted into FSO Africa at the Dubai Drydocks shipyard .
