Kubuna's chief, the so-called Vunivalu von Bau , is regarded as the highest-ranking chief. Among the title holders was Seru Epenisa Cakobau , who for the first time united the tribes of the Fiji Islands into one nation and who founded the Kingdom of Viti . He was crowned king in 1871 before ceding the islands to the British Empire in 1874 . The last title holder was Ratu Sir George Cakobau , who was also Governor-General of Fiji from 1973 to 1983 . Since Cakobau's death in 1989, the office of Vunivalu has been vacant due to disagreements regarding his succession. Discussions are ongoing among the Bau clans to find a successor.
