Kadavu Province

Kadavu Province is one of the fourteen Fijian provinces (yasana) and belongs to the Eastern Division together with Lau , Lomaiviti and Rotuma . It includes the islands of the Kadavu group . Kadavu is a tribal member of the Burebasaga Confederacy , a hierarchy of chiefs ( ratu ) of southern and western Fiji. Head of this alliance is the Roko Tui Dreketi of Rewa .

Kadavu covers an area of ​​478 km², had 10,897 inhabitants in 2017 and is therefore the fourth smallest province in terms of population. The province includes the islands of Kadavu , as well as Ono Island , Galoa Island , Dravuni Island , Matanuku Island , Buliya Island , Nagigia Island and some other tiny islets, which are assigned to nine districts (tikina), each of which has its own chief and chief village :

Each chief is a member of the Kadavu Provincial Council . There are a total of 75 villages in the province. There is no main town, but Vunisea is home to all government institutions as well as a high school (boarding school), elementary school, the police station, the hospital, an airplane runway and at least five supermarkets.

Culture

Almost all of the tikinas have their own dialect, although the linguistic differences are only minor. Overall, these dialects are closely related to the dialect of Rewa in Ono and are very close to the dialects of Beqa, Serua and Vatulele.

Kadavu also includes the Great Astrolabe Reef on the south side of the island, which extends from Ono island to the southern tip of Kadavu Island , Muanasika Point near Nasau village . The reef is considered to be one of the largest contiguous organisms on earth. The ends of the reef are marked by two lighthouses: Solo Light House at Ono Island and Washington Lighthouse at Nagigia Island .
