Serua (Fiji)

Serua is one of the fourteen Fijian provinces (yasana). It is located in the southernmost part of Viti Levu as one of 8 provinces on the island. The province covers an area of 830 km² and had 15,461 inhabitants in 2000.

geography

The province extends from the coast to Mount Vunaoumu in the north. It is divided into the Nuku districts and three non-contiguous areas of the Serua District , which are grouped around Nuku. The province borders the province of Nadroga-Navosa of the Western Division in the west and north, and the province of Namosi in the north and east.

history

According to a report by David Wilkinson , an interpreter and advisor to Arthur Hamilton-Gordon, 1st Baron Stanmore , the first governor of Fiji , the region was the least stable region of Fiji before the surrender in 1874. Part of the west split and joined the neighboring province of Nadroga-Navosa in 1916 .

The 1997 constitution established the Serua Fijian Provincial Communal (for indigenous) constituency. With Fiji's 2013 Constitution , all electoral districts were amalgamated.

Chief system :

Serua belongs to the Burebasaga Confederacy. The head of the province is traditionally the Vunivalu of Korolevu on the tiny island of Serua off the coast of the province.

Administration :

The province is administered by a Provincial Council. The chairman is currently Taito Nakalevu in a settlement in Navua .
