In February 2018 it was indirectly announced for the first time that The Chainsmokers and Illenium, who developed into one of the most famous future bass producers as a result of his remix of The Chainsmokers song Don't Let Me Down, produced in 2016 , were working on a song together would work. This was indicated by a screenshot from her Instagram story on February 28, 2018. In addition to the actual announcement of the remix package for You Owe Me , it showed a downloaded zip file with the name Take Away (TCSXILL) .zip . The song was first played in full version on March 31, 2019 during the The Chainsmokers performance at the Ultra Music Festival , where she visited Illenium for the performance on stage. Who the female voice belongs to was not yet announced at the time, both singer Christina Perri and songwriter Emily Warren (background singer with, among others, Paris ) were suspected to be behind the vocals. That Lennon Stella was actually the other guest musician was only announced later.

On July 17, 2019, a video was shared on The Chainsmokers' Twitter profile, among others , showing a fictional iMessage conversation between them, Illenium and Stella. At the end, the viewer is asked to contact a phone number displayed, as this would have a surprise in store. Behind the surprise was a 15-second excerpt from the official music video, which shows the musicians exploring the Vessel building on Hudson Yard in New York City . It wasn't until July 23, 2019, one day before the release, that the release date was officially announced.

In an Instagram post they shared in parallel with the release date, they announced that they originally had no plans to finalize and publish the song. In fact, after the “preview” at the Ultra Music Festival, they would have been surprised by the positive response from the fans and ultimately the subsequent high demand for the release date would have changed their minds.

Musical and content

The song is in 4/4 time , the tempo is 101 bpm . The intro consists solely of Stella's voice and a few piano sounds. She sings the line "Your heart for takeaway" repeatedly until Taggart joins it with a few beats. They sing the first verse together. After 50 seconds they start with the chorus, while the instrumental build-up continues in the background. Instead of the drop, this is followed by the lines of text that contained the intro. In the first run, Stella's voice can only be heard accompanied by an acoustic guitar and in the second run by an additional build-up. At 01:28, the drop with typical characteristics of The Chainsmokers and Illenium finally sets in. It is also adorned with distinctive vocal chops.

In the text, the lyrical self expresses doubts about his love affair with his partner. Breaches of trust and misunderstandings are addressed. The pre-chorus takes the two lovers to the point where they decide they would be better off alone, until in the chorus they admit to each other that they intended to break each other's heart before he did hers.

“Before I love you (nah, nah, nah)
I'm gonna leave you (nah, nah, nah)
Before I'm someone you leave behind
I'll break your heart so you don't break mine
Before I love you (nah, nah, nah)
I'm gonna leave you (nah, nah, nah)
Even if I'm not here to stay
I still want your heart "

"Before I love you (nah, nah, nah)
I'll leave you (nah, nah, nah)
Before I'm someone you leave behind
I'll break your heart so you don't break mine
Before I love you (nah, nah , nah)
Will I leave you (nah, nah, nah)
Even if I'm not here to stay,
I still want your heart "

Music video

The official music video, directed by The Chainsmokers cameraman Jeremiah Davis, was released at the same time as the single was released. In this all musicians involved in the Vessel building, which can be seen on the Hudson-Yard in New York City . While Illenium, Alex Pall and Lennon Stella are already there on various of the numerous staircases that adorn the work, Andrew Taggart only arrives by helicopter. He and Stella embody the pair of lovers, which is thematized in the lyrics. As soon as he arrives, everyone runs up the various stairs to the top of the building, except for Stella. She takes the path to the helicopter, and enters it at the end of the song, with a sad look in the direction of Taggart. After 24 hours, the music video was viewed over 2.5 million times.

reception

criticism

Takeaway received mostly positive reviews. Conscious Electronic's writer Ryan Morse described the song as "a charming ballad starred by the duet singing of Drew Taggart and Lennon Stella." It would also be "a catchy, melodic gem that will appeal to listeners to the title listen to it on a loop. ”Other critics particularly praised the relationship between the styles of the respective artists. Matthew Meadow of the online magazine Your EDM shared this opinion.

“Takeaway” records the sound of both artists pretty much 50/50, with the typical The Chainsmokers pop writing, combined with melody and Illenium's future bass sounds in combination with its shimmering, soft synths. Stella is the icing on the cake that gives Taggart's masculine vocals feminine energy and a contrasting voice as the song progresses. I wouldn't say it's the best work by either artist, […] but it's a solid track that will definitely get the audience to sing along. "
