content

The inconspicuous and submissive Muharrem lives alone and, as an employee, is the “girl for everything” of his superior. In his private life he tries to live strictly according to the commandments of the prophet, prays frequently - he attends the prayer hours of a Sufi order - and especially abstains from any form of sexuality. Because of his devotion, he is noticed by the sheik of the order, who offers him a position as a rentee of the real estate of the order. This new work confronts him with the temptations of the modern world: alcohol, lies, unchastity.

The friar Rauf becomes his interlocutor; this tries to keep it in balance between conscience and reality. Muharrem is also plagued by sexual dreams. The sheikh tries to resolve the internal conflict by offering Muharrem his daughter as a wife; Muharrem refuses. He notices his change to pride, domination and dishonesty, which plunges him into ever greater confusion. His fear of God makes him go to the sheikh to confess that he has been embezzling him - but the latter has gone into seclusion. As the business partners try to get more deals, his mind becomes more and more confused; he wanders through the streets and follows the woman he has seen in his dreams home: it is the sheik's daughter.

The last scenes show Muharrem lying apathetically in bed and being looked after by the sheik's daughter, who meanwhile argues about the vocation and the dangers of the vocation.
