The Fratel power station ( Portuguese Barragem de Fratel ) is a run-of-river power station on the Tagus . It is located in the region of central Portugal in the Portalegre district . At this point, the Tagus forms the border between the Portalegre and Castelo Branco districts . The Ocreza River flows into the Tejo a little below the power station . To the north of the power station is the Pracana dam , which dams the Ocreza. The A23 motorway runs between the Tagus and the Pracana reservoir . The nearest town is Gardete , which is on the A23.
The power plant was put into operation in 1973 (or 1974). It is owned by the Companhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade (CPPE).
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 48 m above the foundation level (43 m above the river bed). The top of the wall is at a height of 87 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 240 m. The volume of the structure is 124,000 m³.
The dam wall is divided into an engine house on the left side of the river and a weir system with the flood relief on the right side. The weir system consists of 6 gates through which a maximum of 16,500 m³ / s can be discharged.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 74 m (maximum 76 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 10 (or 7.3) km² and holds 92.5 (or 93) million m³ of water - of which 21 million can .m³ can be used to generate electricity. The minimum congestion destination at which the machines can still be operated is 71 m.
power plant
With an installed capacity of 130 (or 132) MW, the Fratel power plant is one of the medium-sized hydropower plants in Portugal. The average annual generation is 347.5 (or 327, 357.9 or 382) million kWh .
The three Kaplan turbines of the power plant each have a maximum output of 45.6 (or 43) MW and the generators 50 MVA . The nominal speed of the turbines is 150 / min. The generators have a nominal voltage of 10 kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage of 10 kV is increased to 165.5 kV by means of power transformers.
The minimum height of fall is 17.8 m, the maximum 28.8 m. The maximum flow rate is 250 m³ / s per turbine.
The power plant is owned by the CPPE but operated by EDP .
