As platforms - especially climbing road at a driveway or Steigenweg in any other way - is in southern Germany , a steep road or path segment called and in Alsace and Austria. In contrast to a path , which is always on foot, many paths can be used by vehicles . In contrast to a mountain pass , a climb does not necessarily have to lead over a mountain, but can also be a simple ascent or descent. Such a route is referred to as a valley trail if it is viewed or described in a downward direction, i.e. from the top of the trail to the bottom of the trail and not the other way around. The usual High German name for Steige seems to be ascent or driveway , more rarely also ramp .

The term is mainly found in southwest Germany and Alsace ( Zaberner Steige ). Known here are the Albsteig or Albaufstiege such as the Geislinger Steige . In Stuttgart, because of its location in the basin, there are a number of paths under the street names, such as the Weinsteige or the Hasenbergsteige . On the B 14 there is the Rote Steige between Bubenorbis and Michelfeld , later (on the old route) the Cröffelbacher Steige , in Schwäbisch Hall there is an (old) Gottwollshäuser Steige . Also in the eastern Odenwald ( Hornbacher Steige and Walldürner Steige , both to Hornbach , a district of Walldürn ) to the Taubertal ( Steige , in the local dialect Staach [ ʃdaːx ], in Dittwar or Alte Miltenberger Steige in Lauda-Königshofen ) and to the Main ( Tellsteige in Würzburg ) the term is common and can be found in official street names as well as an additional popular name. The Steinbacher Steige near Ebelsbach in Lower Franconia is one of the most northerly of those designated as such .

When constructing a climbing road, the aim is to achieve a gradient that is as constant as possible in order to distribute the effort required to move the vehicles evenly over the entire length of the route. The topography of the site can therefore, if the movement of earth masses during road construction is to be kept low, require many and tight curves, and on steep mountain slopes also the creation of serpentines . Engineering structures such as bridges or spur tunnels often have to be built for this. On long climbs and descents a strong reduced pitch the traffic safety as the flow of traffic. Underpowered vehicles can only cope with steep inclines at a slow pace and thus obstruct other traffic. Brakes can fail on long downhill stretches; for this reason, some downhill stretches are forbidden by appropriate signs for trucks and especially the transport of dangerous goods . Alternatively, such routes are secured with an emergency lane . When planning the road , gradients of five percent or more reduce the design speed .

In Hesse, on the other hand, the name stitch is used . A stitch like the Wambacher stitch on federal highway 260 is the same as a trail further south. But there is also a stitch there , the word is used to describe the Thanheimer Steige. Stich says the Süddeutsche recent short and very steep increase a crate, formerly with additional draft animals (so-called bias ) was to make, often in obvious rising or stitch taverns were kept.

In the rest of Germany, such uphill and downhill stretches are called simply mountain or height, as is the case with Elzer Berg on federal motorway 3 , so the concept of elevation is transferred to the road climbing it. The term steep section is common for railway lines .
