Tamyra Mariama Mensah-Stock (born October 11, 1992 ) is an American wrestler . In 2019 she became world champion in the weight class up to 68 kg body weight.

Career

Tamyra Mensah, married Stock, began wrestling as a teenager at Morton Ranch High School in Katy , Texas . In 2010 and 2011 she became the Texas High School Girls Champion after finishing 2nd in 2009. In 2010 she was also US junior runner-up. After high school, she attended Wayland Baptist University (WBU). As a student wrestler, she became WCWA (Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association) Nationals Champion in 2014 and 2017, i.e. the American champion of this association. She also took 3rd place in the 2013 US Universities Championship and 1st place in 2015.

In 2013 Tamyra Mensah became US runner-up and in 2014 she finished 3rd in the USA championship. In 2016, 2017 and 2018 she became USA champion.

In 2015 she finished 2nd in the US elimination for the World Championships and in 2016 she was the winner in the US trials (trials) for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In 2017, 2018 and 2019 she won the US eliminations for the world championships.

She achieved this success in the weight classes up to 67 kg, 68 kg or 69 kg body weight.

After being accepted into the US national wrestling team, she moved to Colorado Springs and trained at the American Wrestling Association's Olympic base there. She belongs to the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club . She is mainly trained by Aaron Meister, Johnny Cobb and Terry Steiner.

Her international wrestling career began with her participation in the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix in the weight class up to 67 kg, where she finished second behind Aline Focken from Germany.

In 2014 she was runner-up behind Dorothy Yeats from Canada at the Universities World Championship in Pécs in the same weight class .

In 2016 Tamyra Mensah tried to qualify in three tournaments for participation in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In March 2016 she came in 5th place in Frisco, in April 2016 in Ulaan-Baatar behind Ilana Kratysch , Israel and Maria Jose Acosta, Venezuela, and in May 2016 in Istanbul behind Alina Stadnik-Machinja, Ukraine and Stigne Marie Store, Norway, again took 3rd place. She narrowly missed the Olympic qualification, whereby a 2nd place would have been enough for her.

In January 2017 she won the renowned "Ivan-Yarigin" Grand Prix in Krasnoyarsk in the weight class up to 69 kg, ahead of Nasanburmaa Ochirbat , Mongolia, Scharchum Tumentsetseg and Elis Manolowa, Azerbaijan. At the 2017 World Cup in Paris, she first defeated Alla Belinskaja from Ukraine, but then lost to Han Yue from China. Since this did not reach the final, she was eliminated and came in 9th place.

In January 2018 she repeated her victory at the "Ivan Yarigin" Grand Prix in Krasnoyarsk, defeating Han Yue in the final. In October 2018 she started at the World Championships in Budapest in the weight class up to 68 kg body weight. She defeated there Yudaris Sanchez Rodriguez, Cuba and the ex-world champion Battsetseg Soronzonbold from Mongolia, but lost in the semifinals against Koumba Larroque from France. In the consolation round she secured a bronze medal with a victory over Olivi Grace Di Bacco from Canada.

In spring 2019 Tamyra Mensah again won the "Ivan Yarigin" Grand Prix in Krasnoyarsk and the "Dan Kolow" & "Nikola Petrow" memorial in Russe, relegating a number of world-class women wrestlers to their places. In April 2019 she was Pan American Champion in Buenos Aires ahead of Yudaris Sanchez Rodriguez and in August 2019 in Lima she won the Pan American Games, each in the weight class up to 68 kg body weight.

The 2019 World Cup in Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan) was the highlight of her career so far. With consistently convincing and clear victories over Michelle Montague, New Zealand, Blessing Oborududu, Nigeria, the 2016 Olympic champion Sara Dosho , Japan, Anna Schell from Germany and Jenny Fransson from Sweden, she became world champion in the weight class up to 68 kg.

In March 2020, Tamyra Mensah-Stock in Ottawa became the Pan American champion in the weight class up to 68 kg in superior style. She won all four fights that she had to contest prematurely, either by technical superiority or by fall. Her opponent in the final, the Cuban Yudaris Sanchez Rodriguez, also shouldered her.
