Tareque Masud ( Bangla : তারেক মাসুদ, Tārek Māsud; born December 6, 1956 or 1957 in Faridpur , Dhaka Division , Bangladesh ; † August 13, 2011 in Manikganj , Dhaka Division, Bangladesh) was an award-winning director from Bangladesh. He directed the films Muktir Gaan and Matir Moina (2002), for which he won a number of international awards, including the International Critics' Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival .

biography

Tareque Masud was born in 1956 or 1957 in Nurpur village in Upazila Bhanga of Faridpur district and spent most of his childhood in a madrasa (Islamic school). His studies were initially interrupted by the 1971 Bangladesh War. After the war he studied history at the University of Dhaka . Masud attended film courses during his studies and began his first film about the painter SM Sultan in 1982 . A number of documentaries and animated films followed. In 1989 he married the American Catherine Masud and moved with her to New York. He died in a car accident on August 13, 2011 on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Manikganj together with his cameraman Mishuk Munier ; his wife was seriously injured.
