action

Dr. Rademacher, assistant manager in a large dairy, has a relationship with the married chief secretary of the company, Brigitte Schwalb. He urges them to spend the weekend together, but she is afraid that her husband will discover their affair. The young Bundeswehr soldier Gerd Enders stole a pistol from the armory of his barracks in order to impress Holger Piwitt, whom he admires and whose friendship he wants. Gerd suggests to Holger that they could practice target practice together before he brings the gun back. While Gerd and Holger drive into the forest and do their target practice there, Brigitte meets with Dr. Rademacher. The secret lovers go to the same place in the forest where Gerd and Holger are shooting and are discovered by the two of them. The couple only notice Gerd and Holger when they approach the car and watch them making love. When the couple want to flee, Holger pulls open the door and threatens them with a gun. He forces Dr. Rademacher and Brigitte to get out. Holger wants to know why they meet in the forest and quickly realizes that the two are having an extramarital affair. He suggests that he wants to rape Brigitte, and Dr. Rademacher attacked Holger, and in the scuffle a shot was fired that damaged Rademacher's car. Rademacher now realizes that the weapon is real. Holger sends Rademacher away from the car while holding his hand and forces Brigitte and Gerd, who does not agree with Holger's approach, to get in. The three drive off in Rademacher's car and leave him standing.

At home, Dr. Rademacher told his wife that the car had been stolen. He had a headache and therefore wanted to go for a walk in the forest. At the urging of his wife, he reports the car to the police as stolen. The next morning the police found the car in the woods. Inside was the body of Holger Piwitt - he was shot at close range. Stoever is looking for Dr. Rademacher in the dairy. He was just about to talk to Brigitte Schwalb, who is unharmed, about the events of the previous evening. Before Stoever, the two succeed in appearing as if their relationship was purely professional. Rademacher states that the car was stolen from him on a country road in the forest the evening before. He couldn't report to the police beforehand because he had to get home first. The car was stolen from him when he had to exit. He didn't see the thief. Stoever and his assistant Matthes go to Piwitt's hangout, where they find out that he was a drifter who sat in the restaurant all day. The waitress tells the officials that he and Gerd Enders left the restaurant yesterday. In Enders' barracks, Stoever learns from the spit that a pistol was stolen from the armory the day before. When Stoever asks Enders about Piwitt, the latter pretends to be clueless and claims that the name means nothing to him. Finally, he admits to have been friends with Piwitt, but he knows nothing of Piwitt's death.

Enders admits the target practice and leads the officers to the place where they held the practice. He claims that Piwitt came alone to the car that showed up, nor did he see how many people were in the car. He himself ran away. When he notices that Stoever does not believe him, he flees in the dense forest. Dr. Meanwhile, Rademacher tries to find out what happened from Brigitte, but Brigitte blocks. The boss of the dairy catches the two in a clear pose. Meanwhile, a taxi driver visits Stoever and tells him about a female passenger whom he picked up near where the body was found. Stoever looks for the address to which the taxi driver drove the woman and rings the doorbell of the Schwalb couple. When Brigitte Schwalb opens the door, Stoever immediately recognizes her as the chief secretary of the dairy where Rademacher works. In response to Stoever's questions, she gives herself unsuspecting that she had a headache and simply ran into the countryside. She lost her orientation and then called a taxi from the phone booth. At that moment, her husband Werner comes home, he reacts to Stoever's explanation that he had a few questions for his wife about one of her work colleagues, he obviously suspects that his wife is unfaithful to him. After Stoever has left the house, Mrs. Schwalb sees Gerd Enders sneaking around her house, but when he is discovered by her, he takes flight. Stoever learns from his assistant, Matthes, that Gerd Enders has deserted. However, Stoever sees no reason for an arrest warrant. He wants to focus the investigation on Rademacher and Brigitte Schwalb.

Stoever visits the head of the dairy, which makes Brigitte Schwalb visibly nervous. Stoever asks the boss in private if he knows anything about a relationship between Rademacher and Schwalb, who replies that he could not imagine that and dismisses Stoever. On the way home, Brigitte Schwalb is followed by Enders. Enders matches her up and gives her back her handbag, which she had to leave behind in Rademacher's car when Holger Piwitt was attacked. He asks her to tell the police everything, as he is under suspicion and is a fugitive, but they feed him off with money and want nothing more to do with the matter. The unsuspecting Mrs. Rademacher tells her husband in the evening that Stoever was with her and that he only wanted to get to know Rademacher's family. Stoever's plan works, and Rademacher gets nervous. Brigitte Schwalb tells Rademacher about her encounter with Enders the next day. Shortly afterwards, Stoever visits them and confronts them with his thesis. He accuses them of actually having a relationship with one another and of having been molested by the two young men. He is also based on the fact that Rademacher was chased away by the two men and the woman was subsequently molested. If she got hold of the gun and shot Piwitt, she acted in self-defense and could not be punished. If not, then she would know who the perpetrator is. He promises Rademacher and Schwalb the greatest possible discretion. As expected, the two are silent, he leaves his card again. After Stoever left, Rademacher asks Brigitte whether it was like that, but she blocks.

Later she finally confides in Rademacher, but Rademacher encourages her to remain silent. The social scandal would be too great for both of them and their respective partners, and they would have too much to lose. She points out that Enders knew that she shot Piwitt and could go to the police. Rademacher says that they have to prevent this and asks Brigitte where she threw the weapon away. After Rademacher said goodbye to Schwalb, he searches the forest for the weapon that Brigitte Schwalb threw away on her escape. In the meantime, Enders checks out Brigitte again and implores her to go to the police to relieve him. Werner Schwalb arrives and confronts Enders and his wife. Enders, who is in possession of the murder weapon, pulls it, threatens Werner Schwalb and then escapes; Rademacher observes the scene from his car. Werner Schwalb calls Stoever, Brigitte interrupts the call, Stoever and Matthes immediately drive to Schwalb. He tells Stoever that his wife has told him everything in the meantime and shows Stoever where Enders has fled to. Schwalb shows the officials a house under construction; Rademacher's car is in front of the house. Stoever and Matthes go in, Rademacher comes towards them with his hands raised. Stoever goes into the building alone and tries to contact Enders, but he is too scared. Enders tries to escape from Stoever and falls into the depths and thus into death. Brigitte Schwalb now bursts into tears and tells Stoever what really happened. Piwitt wanted to rape her, Enders prevented this by shooting Piwitt. Stoever says that he believes her, but notes that her only witness is now dead.
