Stoever and Brockmöller investigate the kidnapping case of tennis professional Andreas 'Andy' Behrens in Hamburg. The kidnappers demand the release of a bank robber imprisoned in Marseille .

action

Lately Stoever and Brockmöller have been confronted with the "Le Circle Blanc (The White Circle)", which also has fans in Germany due to its international connections. Unexpectedly, members of this criminal organization bring Hamburg's great tennis hope, Andreas Behrens, into their power. The kidnappers demand the release of the bank robber Roland Reynal, who has been imprisoned in Marseille . This is an old acquaintance for Stoever, as he was involved in a murder case in Hamburg years ago. Therefore, he contacted two small crooks who were connected to the case at the time and who put him on the trail of the drug dealer Holger. But that doesn't really help him. In contrast, an incident involving Nico Schwalm, who is known to be violent, appears to be an important clue.

Commissioner Poulet from the French police wants to use a bank robber's doppelganger to deceive the kidnappers. Chicken wants to smash “Le Circle Blanc” at all costs, and every means is right for him. So he lets the doppelganger fly to Germany under police surveillance. The exchange against the kidnapping victim is to take place in the middle of the Center Court on Rothenbaum. While Behren's kidnapper and another stranger are already waiting in the audience area for Roland Reynal, his doppelganger enters the stands and goes to the seat reserved for him.

In search of Nico Schwalm and through a hidden clue that Behrens had sent to his girlfriend by phone, the investigators can find the place where the tennis star is being held. The fleeing Schwalm is arrested and Behrens is brought to safety. In the meantime, Reynal's doppelganger is deliberately shot by the stranger. In the dramatic finale on Center Court at Rothenbaum, the kidnapper is shot by the police while he is on the run, but the stranger escapes. He goes back to France by train. There, Commissioner Poulet offers the real Roland Reynal a photo of his dead doppelganger. He wants to intimidate him and make him believe that his organization wants to turn him off and that he can no longer feel safe anywhere. The only possibility left him to testify against the "Le Circle Blanc", then the police could take him into a protection program.

Since Stoever and Brockmöller do not know this background, the Roland Reynal file is closed to them.
