The İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi (German: Technical University of Istanbul ), commonly called İTÜ or Technical University , is a technically oriented university in Istanbul .
It is the third oldest technical university in the world and one of the most famous educational institutions in Turkey. In the QS World University Rankings in 2009, İTÜ was ranked 108th worldwide and 1st in Turkey in the fields of engineering / technology. Many of the graduates of the have received grants and awards from TÜBITAK . Numerous graduates are also members of the Academy of Sciences in the USA, Great Britain and Russia. The university has 39 Bachelor's, 144 Graduate Schools, 13 departments, 346 laboratories and 12 research centers. The ratio of students to professors at İTÜ is 12: 1.
history
It was founded in 1773, during the reign of Sultan Mustafa III. , as "Mühendishane-i Bahr-i Hümayun" ( engineering school of the Ottoman Navy ) for the training of specialists in shipbuilding and cartography in the Ottoman Empire .

23 engineering departments of İTÜ are accredited by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology). The Faculty of Architecture is accredited by NAAB (National Architectural Accrediting Board) and the Maritime Faculty is accredited by IMO . A minimum score of 213 from TOEFL CBT, or a successfully passed test of English language skills is one of the requirements for enrollment for Bachelor, Master or doctoral courses at the İTÜ. According to QS World University Rankings , Istanbul Technical University is one of the top 200 universities in the world in the field of technology and engineering and is the top university in Turkey.
