Teenstar was a television show produced in 2002 and, as a casting show, a counterpart to the then successful show Popstars . Here, however, no band was cast, but, for the first time in a German casting show, a solo artist who had to be between 13 and 19 years old - i.e. a teenager . The program was broadcast on RTL II every Sunday at 8:15 p.m. on April 7, 2002 .

concept

Almost 7,000 young people applied for the program, 2/3 of them girls . The jury music producer sat Mousse T. and Toni Cottura and the MTV presenter Markus Schultze . Jasmin Wagner moderated the show.

After the rough selection of the candidates, a telephone voting took place at the end of each program , in which the viewers could choose a total of 14 candidates for the three-day teen academy . There they received professional dance and singing training. During this phase, the candidates were provided with well-known musicians such as Laith Al-Deen , Billy Crawford and Nicole da Silva as coaches.

The last 14 candidates brought out a CD ( Teen Star presents Teen Academy ) with cover versions of, for example, pictures of you and Let it Be , on which semi-finalist Jenniffer Kae is also represented.

Also by telephone voting on June 30, 2002 in the final show, which took place in the Musical Theater Bremen on Bremer Richtweg, the winner of the program was determined from five remaining candidates. Teenstars was the first German casting show in which the audience alone was allowed to determine the winner.

Finalists

The five finalists were:

  • Katrin Feist ( final song: Cosmic Lover ) - was later a participant in the 4th pop star season, but also failed there in the final (at Teenstar she came second) and did not get into the band Nu Pagadi
  • Larissa Esposito (final song: Yesterday ) Larissa also took part in the 4th season of Popstars, at Teenstar she reached 4th place
  • Andreas (Final Song: After The Rain ) - Andreas' final song is it's the song Sunshine After the Rain , the 2004 Alexander Klaws was published
  • Svetlana (final song: Abracadabra ) - Svetlana also later took part in the 4th season of Popstars, with Teenstar she landed on number 3
  • Pierre Humphrey (final song: Sunshine )

The then 16-year-old Pierre Humphrey emerged from the show as the winner with 34% of the votes. As a win, he got a record deal with Polydor and was able to place his first single Sunshine , which was released on July 22, 2002, at number 12 in the German charts. The follow-up single I Will Do also made it into the Top 100 (82nd place). The album Live It Right , released in December 2002, could not place in the charts.

Audience ratings

The first edition of the show only had a 4.2% market share (the average market share that evening was 6.9%). Overall, the audience ratings fell well short of expectations and the advertising costs had to be reduced from 10,890 euros for 30 seconds to 4,650 euros. Only the market share among 14- to 49-year-olds was seen as a small glimmer of hope (12.2%). However, the final of the show saw a total of 1.4 million (4.8 percent market share). In the relevant group of 14 to 29 year olds, the market share was even 16.8 percent (corresponds to 520,000 viewers).

criticism

The format was viewed critically in the media, with the criticism mainly referring to the instrumentalization of minors, whose personal fate and failure were made the subject of an entertainment program. Several parallels were drawn to the Mini Playback Show , which in turn was criticized for its representation of children styled as adults.
