Tesa is a brand name ( own spelling tesa ; also Tesafilm ) and at the same time the name of Tesa SE , a subsidiary of Beiersdorf AG , which forms an independently managed subgroup . Under the family brand, the Tesa Group develops, produces and markets adhesive tapes and other adhesive materials for consumers and industry . tesa is one of the best-known brands in Germany (awareness according to International Research 2004: 98%).

The word scotch tape has been included in the Duden as a brand name . In Austria, however, Tixo is the best-known brand for adhesive tapes. This is also a brand name to which Beiersdorf AG owns the rights.

history

The name “Tesa” is an artificial word , created in 1906 by Elsa Tesmer, who worked as an office clerk or head of the office at Beiersdorf until her wedding in 1908 (then married to Karlau). From the two first letters of her last name and the two last letters of her first name, she put the term "Tesa" together in a brand name competition.

The company initially manufactured toothpaste tubes, which is why the newly found name was used for the patent tube for toothpaste “Pebeco” developed at Beiersdorf. The tube business was not very successful and for this reason the brand name was assigned to a newly developed product in 1926. The company gave its name to a new type of dipping compound for skinning sausage products, but this product was largely unsuccessful.

In 1935, Beiersdorf AG developed a transparent adhesive film that was initially marketed under the name of Beiersdorf rubber adhesive film and achieved only a few sales. This is why Beiersdorf employee Hugo Kirchberg came up with the idea of naming the product “TESA”. In a letter from 1936, Kirchberg first spoke of the “tesa adhesive film”. In addition to this idea, the businessman had other marketing ideas. So he developed a table dispenser, which the consumer uses as a processing aid for the adhesive tape. With advertising slogans that hit the zeitgeist , he led the product and name to success.

The introduction of Tesa as the umbrella name for all adhesive tapes produced by Beiersdorf increased the importance of the brand to a great extent from 1941. Today there are around 7,000 different Tesa products for industrial customers and end users. In 2001, Tesa SE was spun off from Beiersdorf AG as an independent company (then as a stock corporation Tesa AG) . The annual turnover in 2014 was around 1,076 million euros.

The main plant in Hamburg mainly manufactures products for the automotive and electrical industries. The Tesa-Werk Offenburg produces the scotch tape and other products for the end user .

In Austria , the company took over the TIXO brand from the former manufacturer Kores , a brand name that is as well known in Austria as Tesa is in Germany.

Since March 30, 2009, the company has been trading as Tesa SE , that is, as a European company . 2011 saw the entry into the pharmaceutical market with the approval of patches that can release medicinal active ingredients into the body through the skin.

In October 2015, Tesa moved its headquarters from Hamburg to Norderstedt -Garstedt in the Nettelkrögen industrial park.

Company data

The Tesa SE is a 100 percent subsidiary of Beiersdorf AG and directly or indirectly the parent company of 53 Tesa subsidiaries. The company is active in more than 100 countries. In 1993, what was then the Tesa division of the Beiersdorf Group was in a crisis. The rate of innovation, i.e. H. the share of products in sales that had been developed in the last five years was only 9.5%. After the successful restructuring of the division and the spin-off as Tesa SE , this figure had risen to 47% by 2006.

Sales in 2006 amounted to 805 million euros (2007: 856 million euros; 2008: 860 million euros; 2009: 747 million euros; 2010: 882 million euros; 2011: 947 million euros; 2012: 1,000 million euros ; 2013: 1,039 million euros; 2014: 1,076 million euros). The board members are Robert Gereke (CEO), Norman Goldberg (Director Direct Industries), Jan Christoph Teetz (CFO) and Oliver Höfs (Director Commercial Business).

Tesa as data storage

The two physicists Steffen Noehte and the then graduate student Matthias Gerspach discovered by chance in March 1998 at the University of Mannheim, shortly before a CeBIT presentation, that conventional scotch tape can be used particularly well for burning in structures with lasers, and thus also as data storage. The research duo received initial funding from former SAP board member Klaus Tschira in his European Media Laboratory (EML). The Tesa SE took up this basic research on and started with the researchers first development cooperation agreement. In December 2001 they jointly founded Tesa Scribos GmbH in Heidelberg , in which the researchers hold 25% and Tesa SE 75%. In 2007, however, Tesa SE took over the shares of the other shareholders and became the sole shareholder. In the company that was founded, the team was able to further develop the invention in its own laboratory. Initially, however, the focus was on a system for product tracking and counterfeit protection for branded products. The so-called Tesa Holospot system has been on the market since 2003. So far, scotch tape has not been used as a mass data storage medium.

Counterfeit protection through miniature holograms

The core of the Tesa Holospot technology is a small label made of a special polymer material on which there is a 1 mm² data field. Information such as images, logos or texts with a size of 1 kB can be saved on it. The information can be stored forgery-proof on the holospot in the form of micro-writing or digital holograms generated on the computer, encrypted if desired. The information can be read out with a magnifying glass or with analog or digital reading devices, depending on the desired security level. This enables the individual labeling of each individual product and thus its authentication or tracing.

Generation of X-rays

In 2008, scientists from the University of California, Los Angeles demonstrated that X-rays are generated when transparent adhesive tape is unrolled in a vacuum . The X-rays are strong enough to expose a commercially available X-ray film. In normal use of the adhesive tape, however, there is no danger of radiation from it, since the static charge that is necessary for the creation and that is created when unrolling is removed from the air too quickly to generate radiation.
