Tex and the secret of the grottoes of death (original title: Tex e il Signore degli abissi ) is an Italian television production that was also shown in cinemas. The comic book adaptation of the adventures of the cowboy Tex Willer based on Gian Luigi Bonelli was made in 1985 with Giuliano Gemma in the title role and directed by Duccio Tessari . The German premiere took place in May 1987 on video.

action

Tex Willer and his friends, the former ranger Kit Carson and the young Navajo Tiger Jack, are on the trail of arms smugglers who deliver rifles intended for the army to a bellicose Indian tribe. Since only mummies can be found of the escort troops of the convoy, they are faced with a riddle. Tex then meets the Mexican witcher El Morisco, who tells of magical bullets that are shot with a blowpipe and mummify those struck within seconds. The Yaquis are in possession of these bullets - the tribe for whom the weapons were intended. Tex can persuade the Indian chief Magua to assemble all the tribes of the affected mountain area (the hiding place of the bullets) and lead him to the Yaquis.

Meanwhile, Kit and Tiger have been captured by Chief Kansas, who is acting on behalf of Princess Tulac, who in turn is none other than the daughter of the Lord of the Deep. This lives in a huge underground cave complex, in which eternal fire burns and from which the magic balls are extracted. Tex can free his friends, blow up the weapons depot and fight in the heart of the mountain with the Lord of the Deep, whom he can push into the abyss of fire. Kansas and Tulac die under a rain of rocks; Tex, Kit and Tiger ride towards new adventures.

criticism

The lexicon of international film left no good hair with the work, it was an "screen adventure à la" Indiana Jones ", which offers painfully ridiculous entertainment full of lousy dialogues." Christian Keßler criticizes that "the fantastic" Indiana Jones " -Elements don't get along well with the generic western part ”, notes the“ obviously narrow-chested budget ”, but at least attests to the film's“ charm ”. The Italian reviews welcomed the idea of bringing Tex Willer onto the screen and pointed to the serial nature of the film and the open ending.

Remarks

The film, a production by RAI (Rete 3) and Cinecittà , was also shown as Tex and the Secret of the Caves of Death .

The story essentially follows (with changes) numbers 101 through 103 of the comic.

The outdoor recordings took place in Spain (including Tecisa and Almería). The gross profit in Italy was around 650 million lire .
