action

The brothers Justin and Aaron live in precarious circumstances in a city not named. Both were ten years ago from the clutches of a sect fled to a Ufoglauben pursued and in the rural community in Southern California had grown up Justin and Aaron. The older Justin had initiated the escape and then appeared in the media as a critic of the sect, while the younger Aaron, on the other hand, associates his time in the commune with material security and security. After they received a mysterious video cassette in the mail from the commune that indicated an impending mass suicide, they drove to the place of their childhood for a day at Aaron's insistence.

They are welcomed in the community. Nothing points to an impending event, but nobody claims to have sent the video cassette to the brothers. The fact that all members of the community look like they did when the brothers fled ten years ago is attributed to healthy eating and the carefree life there. While Aaron quickly catches up with the community and persuades Justin that they stay one more day in the commune, Justin discovers supernatural phenomena for which he initially has no explanation. Members of the community later explain to him that a non-human, unspecified entity is present in the region. On the second evening, an argument between Justin and the cult leader Hal over the escape of the brothers escalates - Justin had lied to Aaron in parts about the character of the group in order to solve him from his past.

Justin decides to leave the commune immediately, Aaron decides to stay. Since his car won't start, Justin tries to get back to civilization on foot. He gets lost quickly and meets other residents of the region who do not belong to the municipality, such as the loner Carl and the townspeople Mike and Chris. It turns out that there are different time bubbles distributed throughout the region, within which people trapped in it are cruelly killed by the entity and thrown back into their time bubble after an individually measured time. While Carl, Mike and Chris have short time cycles and commit suicide shortly before the end of the same to die self-determinedly before plunging back into the time bubble, the cycle of the commune lasts several days and the members end up indulging in some kind of religious act kill the entity and then go through the cycle again.

Justin and Aaron set out independently to find their brother. They meet on a mountain and hike back to the commune, which has since been abandoned because of the cycle that has ended; At the campfire, the two discover the remains of clothing from the temporarily killed residents. Aaron is allegedly considering remaining in the commune, as he enjoys the carefree life within the commune, despite the prospect of repeated cruel deaths. When Justin reluctantly decides to stay with him out of concern for his brother and thus also in the commune, Aaron suddenly changes his mind: It was only a matter of being the decision maker in the relationship between the brothers. Both then flee the region in their car, pursued by manifestations of the entity.

History of origin

The directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead released the horror film Resolution in 2012 , which is set in the same area as The Endless and partly includes the same actors, but focuses on the characters Mike and Chris. In 2014 they shot the mystery film Spring together .

According to Benson and Moorhead, the main message of the film is an invitation to nonconformity and anti-authoritarian behavior in order to break out of a hopeless routine in life. The two main characters in the film have the same first names as the directors, who, according to their own account, put on the characters as the opposite of themselves. Regarding the style of the film, Benson and Moorhead said that they deliberately used obsolete media such as videotapes because childhood media create fear in viewers. The motive for the drug addict Chris and the inspiration for the conflict between Hal and Justin over distant injustice was the drug addiction of Benson's mother and his relationship with her, which was recently marked by admission of guilt and forgiveness. Benson's mother committed suicide while filming The Endless .

The Endless premiered on April 21, 2017 at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. It was shown at the Belfast Film Festival , the Fantastic Fest in Austin , Texas , the Filmfest Oldenburg and the White Nights of the German Fantasy Filmfest 2018. The film grossed almost 270,000 US dollars at the end of June 2018.

Film starts 60%
Irish Times 80%
Slash film 90%
The Guardian 80%
Rotten tomatoes 97%

The Rotten Tomatoes review database aggregates 92 reviews to a mean of 97%. The German film portal Filmstarts sees a clear qualitative turning point between the beginning and the end of the film. The Endless starts as a multi-layered portrait of two brothers and unusually leaves the assessment of the sect to the viewer, while such groups are usually portrayed negatively in other films, which editor Christoph Petersen described as a "successful provocation". In the first third, however, the supernatural element of the film is already apparent to the viewer, which then quickly turns into “a mystery film juggling with time anomalies”. Petersen praised the staging of the supernatural apparitions. The British Guardian praised it was difficult to escape the dark atmosphere of the film. It is fun for the viewer to unravel the tricky logic behind the events, but some logic gaps remain. Editor Wendy Ide concluded that The Endless was “a Möbius strip from a film” that made up for its lack of budget with numerous playful ideas. The Irish Times praised the camerawork and the performances of the actors. The film skilfully plays with the viewer's perception and expectations. Editor Donald Clarke drew comparisons to the work of Shane Carruth and saw in The Endless a potential cult film , the background of which only fully revealed after repeated viewing. Slashfilm pointed out that The Endless does not create horror through jump scares or special effects, but rather by engaging with something intangible, which creates an atmosphere of fear and horror that lasts for a long time. The film is "precisely written, intelligent and funny" and will be a topic of conversation for years to come.
