The Grudge is an American horror film directed by Nicolas Pesce and produced by Sam Raimi and Robert G. Tapert , among others . The film is a reboot of the film series of the same name, which was launched in 2004 with The Curse - The Grudge as a remake of the Japanese horror film Juon: The Curse by Takashi Shimizu .

The film takes place in the same timeframe as the American remake from 2004, but moves the action to an American suburb and thus several hundred kilometers away from the events that take place in The Curse - The Grudge .

The cinema release in the USA was on January 3, 2020. In Germany and Austria the film was released on January 9, 2020.

development

In 2011 a sequel to The Curse - The Grudge 3 was announced. Here again, Ghost House Pictures was to take over production together with Mandate Pictures . However, it was later announced that the film would represent a reboot of the series. At this point it was not yet clear whether the film would get a theatrical release or whether it would be released directly for home theater. B. the third part of the US series has passed.

In March 2014 it was finally announced that Jeff Buhler was hired to write a screenplay. Buhler later announced that the film would not build on the original series and would dedicate itself to a story of its own, which u. a. will incorporate new ghosts and demons into the franchise.

In July 2017 it was confirmed that Nicolas Pesce would take over the direction of the film and that Jeff Buhler had been commissioned to revise the script.

Filming

Filming began on May 7, 2018 in Winnipeg , Manitoba and was completed on June 23, 2018. In June 2019, some re-shoots were performed.

The first trailer for the film was released on October 28, 2019, after the first film poster had already been presented. In the USA, the film opened in theaters on January 3, 2020. The German and Austrian theatrical release took place on January 9, 2020.
