season 1

Three teenagers who call themselves Adam, Mira and Kai (after pieces of paper in their pockets) wake up without memories in a hermetic room from which they escape after solving a puzzle. In the forest in which they are on it, when they have to call for help, a strange blue-skinned man appears to them, who sends them to another place through a dimensional portal. From then on they roam different areas, where they always expect new dangers, tasks or helpers. Meanwhile, while they wonder what happened to them, whether they are dead or in a parallel universe, they also discover new superhuman abilities. After being asked by a talking tree to bring back a magical staff named Ishibo - actually a branch that was stolen and transformed from it - they encounter three other teenagers (Vanessa, Skeet and Reeve) with strength. Soon after, they finally find out that they are in a video game that is about to crumble due to a glitch . Adam, Mira and Kai manage to outdo the other trio and fulfill the task of the tree, which clears the way to the final boss of the game. When they have defeated this one, a dragon named Colrath, the game is won and over.

In reality, they are participants in a game show with VR technology of the game The Hollow . The blue-skinned strange stranger from the game is actually the host of the show and congratulates the teams after they take off the VR glasses. While the game is shown in animated scenes , reality is shown as a real film .

season 2

Adam, Mira and Kai, who live in the same place, wake up in their respective homes, where their parents and Kai's butlers are. But they notice that they are animated again, while the others don't notice anything and don't seem to know anything about The Hollow , from which they conclude that they are in a digital version of their reality. Together with Skeet they get back into the game world through a portal in the game studio, where Skeet perishes against an opponent, after which they also meet Vanessa and Reeve again shortly afterwards and join forces with them. After seeing two other teams, one of which has lost and been pixelated and the other is trying to win the game, they realize that a new round of the game has started but they are still stuck in it. To Mira's chagrin, Adam and Reeve, who used to be on her team and was replaced by Vanessa by Kai after being poached by Vanessa, keep fighting, but they finally agree to work together. Vanessa confesses to Kai that she is probably to blame for her situation because she cheated on her game with an accessory that she kept her memories so that she knew from the start that it was a game, which probably caused the glitch.

When the group Freaky can convince (the strange stranger) that they are not just faulty codes in the game, but can remember the real world, he reveals that the Hollow game company secretly creates digital clones of every player and uses them Memories recreated their natural surroundings for a game called The Hollow Life , where real world players can access the digital clones. This means that the group are just the digital clones, while their real selves exist in reality, where Skeet also lives on. Season 2: In the second season, several of the characters from season 1 appear in a different location for the new team's game: a jazz club . Freaky appears there as a singer, Death is at the bar, Benjamin and Benjamini work as waiters. New characters that the group will encounter include:

• Red Cap: a gnome who lives in a castle similar to Colraths. She wears a red cap; if this dries up, the gnom will die, which is why she attacks visitors with her sickle to moisten the cap with blood.
• Cherufe: a lava creature in a volcano on an island, which ruled from there as the "Great Exalted One" over a tribe of humanoid parrots that visitors sacrifice to it.
• Puzzlehead: a being with a Rubik's cube for its head in a world full of colorful geometric shapes and paths. He only speaks in rhymes and poses puzzles to the group, sometimes more than he previously announced.
• Jules Voulcan: a French alchemist and inventor who lives in a Chateau Carcolh castle and who has a pet giant snail named Lou (ie). In October 2016, Netflix announced six new original animated series, including The Hollow, produced by Slap Happy Cartoons Inc., due for release in 2018. In May 2018, with June 8th as the release date, the series was announced as part of the June Re-releases on Netflix. The Hollow achieved a 7.2 out of 10 points in the Internet Movie Database after over 2,400 ratings and an audience rating of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes .

Dave Trumbore for Collider awards 4 stars and a "very good" rating. He particularly praises the mystery elements and the resolution at the end, which rewards the viewer. He also compares it to Maze Runner and counts the series among the best animated series for children of 2018. Greg Wheeler of The Review Geek , who awards 7.5 out of 10, sees a perfectly balanced tone between the humor and the action.

Common Sense Media's Joyce Slaton believes that kids who are a little too young for Stranger Things are the right ages for the series, and parents who appreciate the dark and puzzles might also be watching. Oliver Armknecht from film-Rezensions.de , who awards 7 out of 10 points, writes similarly that although the series tends to target a younger audience, adults also take a look at the fast-paced and absurd adventure.

About the second season, Armaan Babu of meaww.com writes that it feels like "a ride through insanely entertaining challenges and with a mystery that is just deep enough to keep you excited without distracting from the charismatic protagonists." They praise their character development and their further personality layers, which they receive by keeping their memories and knowing their background stories.
