The Independent Group for Change until June 2019 Change UK - The Independent Group ( TIG ), in the German media often referred to as Independent group translated, was a short-lived pro EU - Party in the UK . The party initially emerged as a group of 11 parliamentarians who had left the Conservative Party and the Labor Party .

history

The Independent Group came into being when seven members of the Labor parliamentary group in the British House of Commons left the parliamentary group on February 18, 2019, among other things in order to protest against the fact that party chairman Jeremy Corbyn did not hold a second Brexit vote and because of alleged anti-Semitic tendencies in the party. On February 19, Joan Ryan followed as the eighth MP. On February 20, 2019, the previous MPs of the Conservative Party Heidi Allen, Anna Soubry and Sarah Wollaston joined the TIG - also in protest against Brexit.

In March 2019, TIG applied to the UK election committee to register as a party under the name Change UK - The Independent Group in order to participate in the European elections in May 2019 . Heidi Allen was appointed acting chairman. Registration was confirmed in mid-April. Following the official registration as a party, the EU- friendly small party Renew joined Change UK with a view to the European elections.

On April 16, 2019, then MEP Richard Ashworth announced that he had joined Change UK. He was originally elected as a representative of the Conservative Party in the European Parliament, but was expelled from the party in October 2017 due to disputes with the party leadership over his voting behavior on a resolution affecting Brexit. He sat in the Group of the European People's Party .

In the European elections, the result of which was announced on May 26 and 27, 2019, the party did not win a seat.

On June 4, 2019, Heidi Allen , Luciana Berger , Gavin Shuker , Angela Smith , Chuka Umunna and Sarah Wollaston left the party and announced that they would continue to exercise their mandates in the House of Commons as independent MPs. Umunna (mid-June 2019) and Wollaston (mid-August 2019) joined the Liberal Democrats . Allen, Berger, Shuker and Smith formed The Independents group in the House of Commons in July 2019 .

After the remaining candidates lost their seats in the 2019 general election , Soubry announced the dissolution of the party on December 19, 2019.
