occupation

The Last Jaws - The White Killer (original title: L'ultimo squalo 'The Last Shark'; international also: The Last Shark ) is an Italian -US horror thriller from 1981 . In this work by the Italian cult director Enzo G. Castellari , the Americans James Franciscus and Vic Morrow can be seen in the lead roles of the adversaries of a gigantic voracious great white shark that is making the coast of a small town unsafe. The film had its premiere on April 2, 1981 in Italy; in West Germany it started on April 30, 1981. The strip, which is openly based on Steven Spielberg's Jaws , received moderate to mixed reviews.

action

In the coastal town of South Bay, preparations for an annual windsurf regatta are in full swing and every participant is training hard. But when the favorite disappears without a trace during an exercise at sea and only part of his surfboard - with severe bite marks - is found, the writer Peter and the experienced fisherman Ron immediately suspect a shark attack behind it and warn the organizers against holding the regatta. But Mayor Wells does not want to know anything about it, he expects the impending spectacle to boost his election as governor. Following the firm conviction that the risk of a further attack is low or nonexistent, Wells decides to let the event take place under - in his eyes - sufficiently high security precautions. But the calculation doesn't work out in the face of the merciless killer in the water, and in the end it is Peter and Ron who take on the monster for better or for worse ...

reception

The Last Jaws - The White Killer , shot in Malta and Savannah , Georgia , received only moderate to mixed reviews. Criticized were the sometimes “cheap” production, the similarity to the Spielberg film The Jaws , which was released six years earlier, as well as the lack of background music and low level of effects.

As an example it says:

“[...] A tasty variant of Steven Spielberg's 'Jaws' ... which was garnished with Joe Dante's ' Piranhas ', plus a bit of action, but less suspense and finished [...] Musically ... not exactly the big one Throw, but also no sound that encourages people to listen […] From the point of view of the effects used, one should… not expect miracles, but… [see] the powerful explosions when the shark attacks its victims, already great […] Even without great showmanship [is] delivered a successful break. "

- Tobias Reitmann : italo-cinema.de

“The Italian answer to Steven Spielberg's Jaws (1975) by Enzo G. Castellari ( Jungle Django ). The film is quite entertaining, although some shark scenes seem quite cheap, but the film is not a trash film [...] For me the film is one of the better shark films. "

- Marcus Littwin : tierhorror.de

The Monthly Film Bulletin wrote that the only interesting and amusing thing was to see the film plagiarize Jaws . The Boston Globe criticized the cheap effects.

Film versions

The German theatrical version is about five minutes shorter than the original version. Both versions are included on the German DVD release.

Procedure

Universal Pictures tried to prevent the film from being distributed through Film Ventures before the US premiere. However, a US court refused to grant this request. One month after its publication, the federal judge banned the film from being distributed because it was too similar to the film Jaws . The film was removed from theaters.
