The series documents the emergence of organized crime in America in the 20th century. It examines the rise of notorious mobsters from the American Cosa Nostra and Kosher Nostra with high-quality game scenes, archive images and interviews with well-known people.

In Russia, the first season premiered at the same time as in the US, under the title Рождение мафии: Нью-Йорк ( Russian for “The Birth of the Mafia: New York”).
The series became international in Australia when it was broadcast on December 9, 2015 via the Arena station .
