Manly Banister

Manly Miles Banister (born March 9, 1914 in McCormick , Washington ; died June 8, 1986 in Portland , Oregon ) was an American science fiction writer and fanzine editor.

Life

Banister worked mainly as a journalist and writer for various radio stations, occasionally as a copywriter. During World War II, he served in the US Navy. His first publication in fantastic literature was the short story Satan's Bondage , which appeared in Weird Tales in November 1942 . In the years that followed, he wrote a number of short stories that appeared in Pulp magazines of the 1950s and 1960s, including Amazing Stories , Astounding Science Fiction , Fantastic and Thrilling Wonder Tales . His only novel, The Scarlet Saint , appeared in four parts in Amazing Stories in 1956. In 1957, a heavily abridged book version appeared under the title Conquest of Earth . A new ebook edition of the full text was released in 2016 as part of the Golden Age of Weird Fiction Megapack .

In 1950 and 1951 5 issues of the fanzine he edited The Nekromantikon: The Amateur Magazine of Weird and Fantasy appeared , which the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction certified professional quality. He has also contributed to a number of other fanzines.

He has also written a number of non-fiction books and guides, mainly on bookbinding and printing techniques, and has translated several non-fiction books from German and French.
