The POX are a psychobilly band from Hanover. The POX stands for "Psychobilly Orchestra X".
Band history
The POX was founded in 1982 by singer and guitarist Beaker Pox and drummer Slin Pox (Nils Enghusen) as a two-man combo and was part of the first wave of psychobilly bands. In 1983 the guitarist and songwriter Carl Pox joined them, with which the band had adopted the later regular formation. The POX was the first psychobilly band in Germany . In 1984 a record contract was signed with the label Wahnsinn Records ( Hamburg ) and with it the first sound carrier release of a German Psychobilly band, the EP "It's so dark".
International concerts and other record releases followed. In 1986 the band officially split up after a European tour. In the following years The POX appeared in the line-up of Beaker Pox, Carl Pox and Jake Pox at some international Psychobilly festivals, in 1991 the band finally broke up. In 2008 Beaker and Carl Pox decided to revive the band and celebrated a comeback at the Psychomania Rumble Festival in Potsdam .
In September 2012 a new album was released with the title "Insanity is no Disgrace".
Significance for the early psychobilly scene
With a few exceptions, The POX played without the double bass common in the psychobilly scene and replaced it with an electric bass or omitted the bass completely. With the introduction of a heavily distorted rhythm guitar , The POX introduced another style element that was still unusual in the genre in 1984 . In connection with the atypical distorted vocals, the characteristic POX sound emerged, which was clearly differentiated from the traditional psychobilly sound of double bass-heavy bands. From 1985 The POX also used samplers and electronic sound generators, which in turn represented an innovation in the scene. The POX worked with producer Yak Bondy on the sample-based intros for the Voodoo Power demos and the later studio production. The arrangements of the songs often reveal a clear dividing line from the blues scheme predominantly used in early Psychobilly ; an example is the song “It's so dark”, which is composed and arranged more like New Wave or earlier Gothic Rock in the Bauhaus style , so not a classic “ old school ” psychobilly. While in today's Psychobilly the fun aspect is often in the foreground in the song lyrics and the stage show, The POX emphasize that Psychobilly is the expression of the dark side of people.
The stage shows are enhanced with morbid props such as animal blood or real skeletons, but also with elements of transvestism à la Rocky Horror Picture Show , to support the music and text .
The POX is now regarded as a band from the very beginning that was instrumental in opening up Psychobilly to influences from other musical styles.
