The beekeeper (Original title: The Secret Life of Bees ) is an American drama from 2008 . Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood who also wrote the screenplay based on the novel The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd wrote from the year of 2002.

The film is set in South Carolina in 1964 . 14-year-old Lily Owens lives on her abusive father's farm and regularly has nightmares of the death of her mother, Deborah, of which she feels guilty (Lily was four years old at the time). She finds a surrogate mother in Rosaleen Daise, her father's black housekeeper.

After the right to vote for all Americans has been confirmed ( Civil Rights Act ), Lily accompanies Rosaleen to the neighboring city, where Rosaleen wants to be entered on the electoral register. However, Lily has to watch as Rosaleen is beaten up, taken away by the police and taken to a hospital. She decides to free Rosaleen from the hospital and to flee with her.

The destination of their escape is the place Tiburon, where Lily suspects that she can research something about her mother's past there. However, she does not know exactly how to do it and so she and Rosaleen end up at the farm of the beekeeper August and her sisters June and May. There she meets Zac, who works with August.

Reviews

The organizers of the Toronto International Film Festival wrote that the director treated the complex racial issues with sensitivity. Particularly noteworthy is the depiction of Dakota Fanning.

The film was shot in North Carolina in January and February 2008. Its world premiere took place on September 5, 2008 at the Toronto International Film Festival . The film opened in cinemas in the United States on October 17, 2008. The film was shown in Germany from April 23, 2009.
