The Whispering Star ( Japanese ひ そ ひ そ 星 , Hiso Hiso Boshi ) is a Japanese science fiction film directed by and screenwriter Sion Sono from 2015. The film had its world premiere at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival , where it won the NETPAC Award was awarded.

action

In an undefined, distant future, humans have become an endangered species. Humans live far apart on different planets , in different galaxies . Androids , human robots with artificial intelligence, make up the majority of the population . Also, Android ID 722 Yoko Suzuki is one of these. As a parcel carrier, she travels from star to star to deliver parcels with apparently meaningless content to people. These are small objects such as photographs, cigarette butts, hats or even just individual pens. Yoko spends day after day in her spaceship , which looks like an old Japanese family house, and does her job without questioning her. She dutifully wanders through the desolate, deserted landscapes of various planets without knowing what is in the packages. But one day she too becomes curious.

background

The film deals indirectly with the nuclear disaster in Fukushima 2011. The locations Namie , Minamisoma and Tomioka served as locations , all three in Fukushima prefecture . Until 2013, the cities were wholly or partially in the 20 km exclusion zone of Fukushima. Residents of the places have cameo appearances in the film, they are thanked separately in the opening credits. The catastrophe itself is negotiated through images of deserted, deserted landscapes and the distance between the still living people who are scattered on different planets. The setting in the future also gives the film the character of a dystopia .

Unlike many of Sono's early films, The Whispering Star is slow to narrate. As influences from the genre of philosophical science fiction film may include Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker or Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey be identified.

The Whispering Star is the first film from Sion Sono's own production company Sion Production and was made in its most productive year to date: he released six films in 2015. Sono's wife Megumi Kagurazaka plays the leading role as android Yoko.

criticism

Variety : "... a finger exercise in minimalist science fiction by one of the most prominent maximalists in world cinema."

Cinema Scope : “The spirit of nostalgia and lamentation is reflected in the high-quality production design. (...) The images of Fukushima and its wandering souls are undoubtedly haunting. "
