Dorothea "Thea" Hochleitner (born July 10, 1925 in Bad Gastein , † May 11, 2012 in Kufstein ) was an Austrian ski racer . She celebrated numerous victories in international races in the 1950s, was six times Austrian champion and won the bronze medal in giant slalom at the 1956 Winter Olympics .
Career
Hochleitner started skiing at an early age and achieved some successes in the youth field. At the beginning of the 1950s, she succeeded in joining the Austrian leadership. In 1951 she won the downhill run of the international winter sports week in Bad Gastein, in 1952 she won the giant slalom in Zell am See and on the Hochkönig and was accepted into the national team of the Austrian Ski Association .
Hochleitner celebrated the first major victory of her career in 1953 in the descent of the Arlberg-Kandahar race in St. Anton , and with sixth slalom rank she also achieved third place in the combination. The next winter she took two fourth places in the downhill and combined races of the Hahnenkamm race in Kitzbühel and took part in the 1954 World Championships in Åre . However, there she was unsuccessful and could not finish her only race, the downhill. At the Austrian Championships in 1954 in her home town of Bad Gastein, she won the titles in slalom, giant slalom and combined.
In the winter of 1954/55, Hochleitner won the Hahnenkamm combination and came third in the downhill. She celebrated another victory in the slalom of the Harriman Cup in Sun Valley , taking second place in downhill and combined. At the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo , the now 30-year-old won the bronze medal in the giant slalom, which also counted as a World Cup medal, behind her teammate Josefa Frandl and the German winner Ossi Reichert . With seventh place in the downhill and twelfth place in the slalom, she narrowly missed another medal in the combination.
In the 1956/57 season, the Salzburg woman won the downhill in Crans-Montana as well as the slalom, the downhill and the combination on Etna in Sicily . She achieved second places in the slalom in Kitzbühel and in the giant slalom in the SDS races in Grindelwald and in Navacerrada . In the winter of 1957/58 she contested her last race. Although she could not win any more races, she reached second place in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen slalom and came third in the Grindelwald descent and the Seefeld giant slalom . At her “home World Cup” in 1958 , however, with ninth place in the giant slalom and 20th place in the downhill, she fell short of her expectations. After the season, Hochleitner ended her active career at the age of 32. After that she worked for many years as an employee of the ski company Kneissl .
