Theodor Hoppe (theologian)

Theodor Ernst Heinrich Hoppe (born November 7, 1852 in Burgdorf ; † March 26, 1932 in Hildesheim ) was a German Lutheran theologian, consistorial councilor and most recently general superintendent of the diocese of Hildesheim .

Life

Theodor Hoppe grew up in Elstorf near Buxtehude , where his father Johann Heinrich Louis Hoppe was pastor at the Nicolai Church , and from 1866 attended the grammar school in Celle , where he passed Michaelis ' Abitur in 1871. He studied theology at the Universities of Leipzig and Göttingen . In the winter of 1871/72 he became a member of the Leipzig University Choir of St. Pauli (now the German Choir ). In 1873 he was accepted into the theological monastery there. Michaelis in 1874 he passed the first theological exam. Through the mediation of Professor Ludwig Schöberlein , he received a private tutoring position in the family of the Landgrave of Hesse, including for the almost blind Prince Alexander. He did not accept the consistory's appointment to a position as rector in Fallersleben (1875). At the request of the Landgrave family, he received his doctorate in 1875 in Rostock Dr. phil. In the fall of 1876 Hoppe passed the second theological exam. On January 17, 1878 he was ordained by the consistorial councilor Friedrich Düsterdieck . He initially got a job as assistant preacher at the St. Marien garden church in Hanover . In 1879 he became pastor in Ostenholz , in 1886 pastor in Barkhausen-Rabber , in 1888 superintendent in Markoldendorf and in 1897 first castle preacher and superintendent in Hanover. In 1903 he became general superintendent of the General Diocese of Hildesheim. Its introduction took place on February 19, 1903 in Hildesheim's Andreaskirche . He retired on April 1, 1925.

From 1897 to 1924 Hoppe was a member of the consistory as a spiritual councilor, and from 1904 also of the state consistory in Hanover. When the regional church was reorganized in 1924, he was accepted as a clerical member of the regional church office in Hanover , from which he left when he retired the following year.
