In the winter of 1882/83 he left Schwerin to travel to Italy. After stays in Naples , among others , Martens died of cholera in Portici in 1884. He was buried in the cholera cemetery near San Giovanni at the foot of Vesuvius .

Along with Carl Malchin, Theodor Martens was one of the first pure landscape painters in Mecklenburg . He was particularly influenced by the works of French landscape painting ( Paysage intime ) by Barbizon and their representatives Camille Corot , Virgilio Diaz and Charles Daubigny and mainly painted landscapes and architectural paintings from Mecklenburg.
