Theodul Schlegel (* around 1485; † January 23, 1529 in Chur ) was a Swiss clergyman and from 1515 to 1529 abbot of St. Luzi in Chur. He was tortured by the Grisons during the Reformation and then executed.

Life

Little is known about his childhood and youth. He studied from 1504 - 1507 theology in Tubingen and Heidelberg. He was then accepted into the Premonstratensian monastery convent St. Luzi in Chur. In 1513 he was named as legal representative of the monastery, in 1514 as its prior. From 1515 he served as abbot of the monastery. At first he was interested in the reformist ideas of Huldrych Zwingli and Joachim Vadian . In Ilanzer Colloquy 1524 - 1526 but he defended the old Catholic faith.

In 1523 the city of Chur joined the Reformation. In 1528 the city tried to gain control of the monastery. Thereupon Theodul Schlegel had the treasure and property of the monastery brought to Feldkirch in a safe place. Most of the members of the monastery fled to Feldkirch or Liechtenstein's Bendern . This year the old bishop of Chur Paul Ziegler should be replaced by a new bishop Giovanni Angelo Medici. to be replaced by the later Pope Pius IV . But the Bündner refused to appoint the new bishop. They insisted on a bishop from their own ranks. In the autumn of this year, Count Wolf Dietrich von Hohenems and his wife Clara Medici , a daughter of the northern Italian aristocracy with an entourage from Como , tried to reach their home in the Upper Rhine Valley. They chose the shortest route over the Splügen Pass, which was under the control of the Drei Bünde .

So that Giovanni Angelo Medici could reach Chur unrecognized through Graubünden territory, he joined the tour company incognito. But these were stopped by an early onset of winter and snow. Locals were recruited to deliver news to Hohenems and to Theodul Schlegel . But the locals handed the messages over to the Graubünden authorities instead of delivering them. This is how Giovanni Angelo Medici's plan became known. The Büdner forced the tour company to return to Como. They also arrested Theodul Schlegel , charged him with high treason, tortured him and beheaded him on January 23, 1529 in Chur.
