Theophilus Neuberger , also Theophil (born May 5, 1593 in Jena , † January 9, 1656 in Kassel ) was a German Reformed theologian and clergyman .

Life

Neuberger was the son of the Palatinate court preacher Martin Neuberger and was probably born on a trip in Jena. He studied theology at Heidelberg University and had to cancel the subsequent trip to Western Europe due to the death of his father. Instead, he took the preaching exam. After the ordination that followed, he became a pastor in Neuburg near Heidelberg in 1614 . He quickly gained notoriety as an excellent pulpit preacher. As early as 1615 he received an appointment as court preacher to the Palatine Elector's widow Luise Juliana of Orange-Nassau in Kaiserslautern. On July 12, 1620, he followed a call from Elector Friedrich V to Heidelberg .

In the chaos of the Thirty Years' War, Neuberger fled with the court to Saxony and on to Berlin. In 1623 he was called to Güstrow as court preacher by Duke Johann Albrecht II of Mecklenburg . He stayed there until Wallenstein took over the duchy in 1628. Neuberger subsequently settled in Berlin as a private citizen for a short time.

Neuberger received a call as court preacher to the court of Landgrave Wilhelm V of Hesse-Kassel in October 1628 . On October 30, 1628, he settled in Kassel. In 1631 he was a participant in the Leipzig Religious Discussion . When the Fulda bishopric came to Hessen-Kassel in the turmoil of war in 1632, the prince's court preacher Neuberger was given the responsibility of the monastery by the chancellor Wilhelm Burchard Sixtinus .

After the death of Paul Stein (1585-1634) on December 12, 1634, Neuberger was elected Superintendent of Kassel by the clergy of the Sprengels . He kept his position as court preacher at the court of Hesse-Kassel and worked in both positions for decades in Kassel.
