Theotbald probably came from, like his predecessor Alberich , the Bavarian noble family of the Hahilinga , who were closely related to the Carolingians due to their kinship with the Waltrichs and were particularly wealthy in the Oberhaching and Unterhaching area .

After the death of his relative Alberich on December 21, 838, Theotbald was ordained bishop of the Diocese of Langres and also directed the affairs of the Abbey of Saint-Bénigne in Dijon. He took office at a time of growing political instability in the Frankish Empire due to the rift between Emperor Ludwig the Pious and his three sons from their first marriage. As a result of the urging of his second wife Judith , Ludwig the Pious had changed the ordinatio imperii, recognized by all sides, with the plan of division of the empire of 837 in favor of his later-born son Karl , which the brothers from his first marriage, Lothar I , Pippin I and Ludwig the German into one common alliance against the father and, after his death, drove in a different alliance constellation also against the later-born brother. During this time of unrest, Theotbald supported Charles the Bald - so he appeared in mid-November 840 together with the very influential Count Warin von Mâcon to plan Charles's campaigns in Orléans and on April 17, 841 for his Easter celebrations in Troyes . With the victory of the allied brothers Karl and Ludwig the German in the battle of Fontenoy , the unity of the Franconian Empire fell apart and the diocese of Langres was added two years later in the Treaty of Verdun , in the spirit of Theotbald, to the sphere of power of Charles the Bald in the emerging Western France .

Theotbald died on August 17th, 856; he was succeeded by the deacon of the Archdiocese of Reims , Isaac.
