Thiergarten is a district of the municipality Altenthann in the Upper Palatinate district of Regensburg ( Bavaria ).

Geographical location

Thiergarten is located in the Regensburg region, on State Road 2145 and about four kilometers southwest of Altenthann.

history

In 1600 Thiergarten is mentioned for the first time in writing as the "newly pauterized courtyard of Thürgarten" in the Hofmark Lichtenwald. In 1694 two courtyards were established in Thiergarten, and three courtyards by the middle of the 18th century.

As of March 23, 1913 (Easter) Thiergarten belonged to the parish Altenthann and had two houses and 16 residents. There was also a Thiergarten Castle with 5 residents.

On December 31, 1990 Thiergarten had 14 inhabitants and belonged to the parish Altenthann.

Princely Thiergarten of Thurn and Taxis

About three kilometers south of the village of Thiergarten is the completely fenced-in 2800 hectare Princely Thiergarten between Hammermühle, Altenthann, Donaustauf and Brennberg, a local recreation area with wild deer, wild boars, lynxes, beavers, otters, black storks and other animals. It was created in 1813 as a hunting forest for the Princes of Thurn and Taxis .

There, on October 1, 1988, at the Aschenbrennermarter hunting lodge , the Bavarian Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauss collapsed and died a few days later, on October 3, 1988, in the Regensburg hospital of the Barmherzigen Brüder .
