Thierry Bruehl

Thierry Bruehl (born February 19, 1968 in Paris ) is a German - French theater, music theater and film director.

Thierry Bruehl has staged in Berlin, Frankfurt, Ghent, Amsterdam, Vienna, Salzburg and Seville, among others. Theater and dramatic projects

At the age of 19, Thierry Bruehl became assistant director, first at the Freie Volksbühne Berlin, later at the Hamburger Schauspielhaus and the Vienna Burgtheater ; he was an assistant a. with Ruth Berghaus , Ariane Mnouchkine in Paris (Die Atriden) and close collaborator of Hans Neuenfels . Bruehl realized his own productions from 1992 onwards. After examining classical subjects (such as Egmont, Richard III ), productions of world premieres by contemporary authors (such as Dea Loher, Oliver Bukowski, Andreas Laudert) on stages in Germany and Austria followed. He also regularly staged plays by French dramatists such as Marivaux, Molière, Koltès and Reza.

In freelance interdisciplinary projects from 1998 onwards, Bruehl worked primarily with actors such as Hanns Zischler , Christian Grashoff , Mehdi Moinzadeh and v. a. repeatedly with Ulrich Wildgruber . With him he realized u. a. on behalf of the Berliner Festspiele (1998) the Nietzsche evening The Wanderer and His Shadow at the Schaubühne (1998) and set up Goethe's West-Eastern Divan (Frankfurt, 1999) for him. Music theater and scenic concerts

His world premiere of the musical theater piece brangg! after Celine, developed with the composer Michael Beil for the Eclat Festival in Stuttgart (2005). Since then, numerous world premieres of contemporary operas, including Emily Dickinson's Uhr with Friederike Kammer (Illes / Muck, UA Eclat Stuttgart 2007), Ligeia and Fleischverwandnung (Hüseyin Evirgen, 2007/2009), Gespensterhaus by Reinhard Febel (2007), coveted by Beat Furrer ( 2010).

In 2016 Bruehl staged An Index of Metals by Fausto Romitelli in the Música (s) Contemporánesa (s) cycle at the Teatro Central in Seville.

Since 2009 Thierry Bruehl has been working with renowned ensembles in the field of contemporary music, such as the Quatour Diotima (Paris), the Ensemble Nadar (Belgium) or the Austrian Ensemble for New Music , as well as the Ensemble Modern (Frankfurt) and the Ensemble Musikfabrik (Cologne). From 2015 onwards, music theater pieces were developed especially for these ensembles, including bluff for the Ensemble Nadar (with Michael Beil; premier at Musiktage Donaueschingen) and sugar water for and with the Ensemble Modern (premier at the cresc .... Biennale Frankfurt).

An intensive examination of Ulysses by James Joyce from 2011 on has so far been reflected in several music theater pieces in collaboration with the composer Brigitta Muntendorf (including Who the hell is Gerty ? , premier 2011; bronze by gold , premier 2015).

The world premieres of the musical theater pieces directed by Thierry Bruehl were followed by numerous invitations to European festivals such as the Munich Biennale , Donaueschinger Musiktage, Eight Bridge Festival Cologne, Holland Festival Amsterdam, Spor Festival Aarhus, Biennale di Venezia and musicadhoy Madrid.

Thierry Bruehl is co-initiator and member of the artistic management of Klang 21 - Association for the Promotion of Contemporary Music and Performing Arts, which, among other things, launched the Pocket Opera Festival in Salzburg.

Film projects

In 2007 Bruehl directed and wrote the screenplay for the highly regarded films 5 × Germany , five clips from five cities about the self-image and external image of young people from socially disadvantaged areas.
