Thilo Bode (born February 19, 1918 in Bochum ; † January 3, 2014 ) was a German journalist who was best known in the 1960s and 1970s as a long-time foreign correspondent for the Süddeutsche Zeitung . The former Greenpeace manager Thilo Bode is his son.

Life

Thilo Bode joined the Navy in 1936 . He thus belonged to Crew 36 , this year's officer candidate year. From July 1940 to March 1942 he drove as a division officer on the destroyer Theodor Riedel . He then completed his submarine training and served as an officer on watch on U 505 until March 1943 . In this position, Thilo Bode took part in a patrol that took the boat into the Caribbean and the waters around Trinidad. On April 1, 1943, he was promoted to lieutenant captain and served again from May to August 1943 as first watch officer on U 505 , which during this time, as a result of multiple damage, was unable to leave for a planned - fifth - operation. On August 30th, Thilo Bode took command of U 858 . With this Type IX submarine , Thilo Bode made two ventures: from June 12 to October 4, 1944, a trip to observe the weather in the North Atlantic and, from February 2, 1945, a patrol on the North American east coast. During his time as submarine commander, Thilo Bode did not sink any ships. Lieutenant Bode surrendered with his crew on May 14, 1945 off the coast of Delaware ; one week after the unconditional surrender of the Wehrmacht .

After the end of the war, an internship at the Schwäbische Zeitung led to journalistic work for the Stuttgarter Wirtschaftszeitung and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . In 1952 he joined the Foreign Service and worked as a press attaché at the German embassy in Delhi . He then switched back to journalism and for many years was the Asia correspondent based in Delhi and later Singapore , first for Die Welt and from 1959 for the Süddeutsche Zeitung. From 1972 he reported for the Süddeutsche Zeitung from London .

Bode spent his retirement in Munich .
