Thismia is a genus of plants in the Thismiaceae family.
description
The plants are persistent, mycotrophic and chlorophyllless . There is no rhizome . The roots run horizontally and are strongly cylindrical. The stem is very short and unbranched. The leaves are sessile and white. The inflorescences consist of individual flowers . The bracts of the flowers are overlapping. Flower stalks are missing. The flowers are erect and neither ribbed nor winged. The perianth becomes obsolete when the fruit ripens. The six stamens are hanging. The ovary is unicameral. The capsule is cup-shaped.
Occurrence
The species of the genus are spread pantropically .
Systematics
The genus Thismia was established in 1844 by William Griffith in Proceedings of the Linnean Society of London , Volume 1, page 221, Thismia brunonis served as the type species . The generic name Thismia represents an anagram for Smithia . The name was created in honor of the English microscopist Thomas Smith. The name Smithia itself had already been given for a genus of legumes (Fabaceae).
