Thomas Gerwin

Thomas Gerwin (born February 8, 1955 in Kassel ) is a German composer , sound artist , curator and musicologist .

Career

Gerwin first studied guitar and flute in Kassel from 1975 to 1978, as well as musicology , linguistics , philosophy and art history in Tübingen and Berlin . He completed his studies with an ( MA ). He then studied composition in Darmstadt , Hamburg , Cologne , Munich and Strasbourg from 1978 to 1984.

After Thomas Gerwin worked for the Landestheater Tübingen from 1984 to 1987 , he completed the artistic postgraduate course in composition with a focus on electronic music in Stuttgart . He completed this course with a diploma .

Between 1975 and 1990 he worked as an editor in the field of early music and as a lecturer in the subjects of experimental music, theory , ear training and guitar.

Life

Thomas Gerwin has been a freelance musician since 1998. In 1985 he was a founding member of the cross-media artist group Art Wave Ensemble , which disbanded in 1989. Between 1993 and 1997 Gerwin was the deputy chairman of the German Society for Electroacoustic Music (DEGEM) . In 1994 he founded the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (WFAE) . From 1988 to 1990 he was the initiator and director of the Tübingen RaumKunstTage and then from 1990 to 1998 director of the electroacoustic music archive IDEAMA at the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe . In 1996 he was appointed head of the media art studio inter art project . From 1998 to 2000 he was a founding member and board member of the “World Forum for Acoustic Ecology”. In 2003 Thomas Gerwin was musical director of the Institute for Multisensorial Art (IfmK) . From 2006 to 2010 Gerwin was chairman of the Berlin Society for New Music . In 2006 he founded the "Institute for Multisensorial Art" and has been the founder and director of the AG tiefKLANG of the Berliner Unterwelten eV since 2010 .

Thomas Gerwin is the artistic director of various ensembles such as the chamber ensemble ad hoc and the annual Berlin International Sound Art Festival.

music

Gerwin's work is strongly influenced by the diverse examination of the means of electroacoustic music. His numerous spatial works incorporate elements of theater , dance , film and sculpture . In his Berlin studio he designs sound and video installations, stages experimental radio plays and composes music for radio and concerts . In his concert series “Klangwelten ad hoc”, the “International Sound Art Festival Berlin” in the numerous other events, he repeatedly experiments with new concert and reception formats. His music was performed in Asia , Australia , Canada , Europe and in North and South America . His scores are published by Ricordi-Musikverlag.
