Thomas J. Barton

Thomas J. Barton (* 1940 in Texas ) is an American chemist and university professor . He has been with Iowa State University since 1967 and has been professor emeritus there since 2012 . His scientific focus is organosilicon compounds , whereby he was also active in other areas as head of the Ames Laboratory for many years . Barton has contributed to over 180 publications, has received a number of awards, and is President of the American Chemical Society for 2014 .

Life

Career

Thomas J. Barton was born on the Texas Gulf Coast in 1940 ; his parents were teachers. He began studying chemistry at Lamar University (as part of the Texas State University System ) and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1962 . In 1967 he received his Ph.D. from Merle Andrew Battiste. in organic chemistry at the University of Florida and subsequently worked as a postdoc on behalf of the National Institutes of Health at Ohio State University . In the same year 1967 Barton accepted the call to the Iowa State University (ISU) to work there in research and teaching. His time in Iowa was interrupted by two academic exchange programs (via the National Academy of Sciences in the Soviet Union and via NATO in France ) and two visiting professorships in Japan and at the University of Montpellier .

Barton was appointed editor of the newly formed journal Organometallics in 1981 . It is published by the American Chemical Society (ACS), of which he has been a member since 1963. In addition to his work at Iowa State University, he was director of the Ames Laboratory from 1988 to 2007 . In the Ames , Iowa-based laboratory, owned by the United States Department of Energy , Barton gained experience in a variety of other sciences, including: B. in solid state physics , materials science or metallurgy . With this experience he took over the direction of the Institute of Physical Research & Technology at the ISU in 1998 and was interim director of the Iowa Energy Center for one year (2009) .

Barton retired in 2012, but continues to work as an emeritus at ISU. The American Chemical Society elected him President for 2014.

Scientific activity

Barton deals of his life researching silicon-organic compounds , such as the synthesis of silane - polymers . He also examined these polymers with regard to their (especially optical ) properties. At the Ames Laboratory , he led interdisciplinary research that dealt with innovative materials, new energy sources and questions of environmental technology .

Honors

In 1975 he received the Wilkinson Departmental Teaching Award and in 1982 the Outstanding Teacher Award of the ISU; both for excellent teaching. The ACS also awarded him the Frederic Stanley Kipping Award in Organosilicon Chemistry in 1982 for his achievements in the area of ​​organosilicon compounds . Barton has also been a Research Fellow of the British Royal Society of Chemistry since 1983 and received an award for Outstanding Scientific Accomplishment in Materials Chemistry as part of his work for the Ames Laboratory in 1989 . In 1995 the ACS honored him with the ACS Midwest Award , before the ISU gave him the Award for Achievement in Economic Development in Iowa in 2010 .
