Thorstein Treholt

Thorstein Treholt (born April 13, 1911 in Skoger , Fylke Vestfold ; † March 17, 1993 ) was a Norwegian politician of the Arbeiderpartiet , who was a member of the Storting for almost 20 years and was Minister of Agriculture between 1971 and 1972 and again from 1973 to 1976. In addition, he was regional president (Fylkesmann) of the province of Oppland for five years from 1976 to 1981 .

Life

Farmer, school principal and local politician

Treholt, son of the small farmer Ole Thorsteinsen and his Sigrid Olsen, was orphaned at the age of nine after his father died in 1917 and his mother in 1920. After graduating from business school between 1928 and 1930, he attended the agricultural school in Vestfold between 1932 and 1934 as a control assistant at the municipality of Slagen in Vestfold. After attending the state school for small farmers between 1933 and 1934, he was a control assistant between 1935 and 1937 and, most recently, senior assistant in the municipalities of Lom and Skjåk , before he was temporarily agricultural assistant in Fylke Oppland in 1938.

After that, Treholt, who also ran a small farm in Brandbu between 1939 and 1982, was community aggronomist von Brandu between 1939 and 1947 and from 1945 to 1946 and again between 1949 and 1950 a smallholder teacher at the agricultural school of Valdres , before he was from 1950 to 1960 Was the principal of this school. State Secretary and Member of Parliament

On June 4, 1954, he became State Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture (Statssekretær i Landbruksdepartementet) and as such was until September 1, 1957 the closest collaborator of Olav Meisdalshagen and Harald Johan Løbak , the then agriculture ministers in the third government of Prime Minister Einar Gerhardsen .

In 1958, Treholt became a member of the Storting for the first time as a candidate for the Arbeiderpartiet (Ap) and represented the interests of the Fylke Oppland for almost 20 years until the election on September 12, 1977 . He was also a member of Brandbu's municipal council from 1959 to 1961.

During his membership in parliament he was from October 13, 1961 to September 30, 1965 first chairman and then between October 15, 1965 and March 17, 1971 vice-chairman of the Agriculture Committee of the Storting. At the same time he was from 1962 to 1967 a member of the municipal council of Gran , where he was chairman of the Ap from 1960 to 1966.

From October 14 to December 18, 1970, he was briefly Vice-President of Odelsting , one of the Storting chambers at the time.

Minister of Agriculture and Fylkesmann

On March 17, 1971 he was appointed by Prime Minister Trygve Bratteli as Minister of Agriculture (Landbruksminister) in his first government , which he belonged to the end of Bratteli's term of office on October 18, 1972.

He also held the post of Minister of Agriculture in the second government of Prime Minister Bratteli from October 16, 1973 to January 15, 1976.

After leaving the government, Treholt succeeded Nils Handal as District President ( Fylkesmann ) of the Oppland province and held this position until he was replaced by Knut Korsæth in 1981. He was also chairman of the labor court at Fylke Oppland between 1977 and 1982. After finishing his post as Fylkesmann, he was appointed commander of the Saint Olav Order in 1981 .

His son is the diplomat Arne Treholt , who was arrested on January 20, 1984 as press spokesman for the Foreign Ministry on suspicion of espionage for the Soviet Union and sentenced in 1985 to 20 years imprisonment for treason and espionage for the Soviet Union.
