Three Forks is a city in the United States , in the US state of Montana . The place lies in the fork of the Jefferson River and Madison River , immediately before they flow together in Missouri Headwaters State Park to the Missouri River .

Three Forks had 1728 inhabitants in 2000 and covers an area of 3.4 km² . The next larger town is Belgrade, about 35 km south-east.

history

In 1805, the Lewis and Clark expedition explored the headwaters of the Missouri, where Indian tribes had roamed for centuries . In 1810, 32 Missouri Fur Company men established a fur trading post at Three Forks. Among them were John Colter , who had visited the region as a trapper two years earlier and was captured by Blackfoot Indians, and George Drouillard . The trading post was abandoned due to attacks by Indians and grizzly bears .

In the years that followed, other trappers moved through the region, including Jim Bridger and Kit Carson . Father DeSmet began his missionary work in 1840 with the Absarokee and Flathead Indians. From 1862 several settlements were founded in the area.

Three Forks was formed in 1908 when the Milwaukee Railroad was building its railway line to the Pacific .

Demographics

According to the 2000 census , Three Forks had 1,728 people; 686 households and 469 families were counted. The population density was 525 inhabitants per km². 726 residential units were recorded. The racial the population was composed of 97.6% White, 1.1% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander and 0.4% from other races; 0.6% said they came from several ethnic groups. 1.3% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 686 households, 35.4% had children or adolescents living with them. 59.3% were married couples living together, 5.8% were a single mother, and 31.5% were non-families. 26.7% were made up of single households and 12.1% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.08.

The population was divided into 28.4% under 18 years of age, 6.0% from 18 to 24 years of age, 28.9% from 25 to 44 years of age, 21.8% from 45 to 64 years of age and 15.0% from 65 years of age or older. The mean age ( median ) was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 102.8 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 102.6 males.

The median income for a household (median) was 34 212  US $ , and the median income for a family $ 39,938. Males had a median income of $ 30,086 and females $ 19,196. The per capita income was $ 15,362. 5.5% of families and 7.7% of the population lived below the poverty line, including 6.6% of the population under the age of 18 and 6.7% of the population aged 65 or over.
