Tibor R. Machan

Tibor Richard Machan (* March 18, 1939 - March 24, 2016 ) was a professor at the Institute of Philosophy at Auburn University and holder of the R. C. Hoiles Chair of Business Ethics and Free Enterprise at the Argyros School of Business & Economics at Chapman University in Orange , California .

Life

Machan studied at Claremont McKenna College (BA in Philosophy, 1965) and at New York University (MA in Philosophy, 1966) and received his PhD in 1971 from the University of California at Santa Barbara (Ph.D. in Philosophy).

Between 1992 and 1993 he was visiting professor at the United States Military Academy (West Point). Machan worked for two years as editor of the journal "Reason" and for 25 years as editor of "Reason Papers", an annual journal for interdisciplinary normative research. He gave lectures on business ethics and political philosophy in Europe , South Africa , New Zealand , Georgia , Armenia and Latin America . Professor Machan lived in Silverado , California.

Most recently, he was a research fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and the Pacific Research Foundation in San Francisco. Machan was also an associate member of the Ludwig von Mises Institute and the Cato Institute . Professor Machan was a freelance columnist, author of more than 100 specialist articles and more than 30 books, most recently Libertarianism Defended , (Ashgate 2006).

The main focus of Machan's work was political philosophy , particularly the theory of natural rights. Central publications on this are Individuals and Their Rights (Open Court, 1989) and Libertarianism Defended (Ashgate, 2006). He also wrote regularly on business ethics, an area in which he argued from a neo-Aristotelian point of view. He paid particular attention to the fundamental right to private property.

In his publications on epistemology , Machan criticized the conception of human knowledge, according to which knowledge of a proposition p presupposes a final, perfect, timeless and complete understanding of p. Basically following Ayn Rand, he argued for a contextual conception of human knowledge. Machan's criticism of the concept of animal rights also achieved a certain level of awareness among specialist circles . For example, in his widely read specialist article “Do Animals Have Rights?” (1991) and his book Putting Humans First: Why We Are Nature's Favorite (2004), he argued that animal rights do not exist.
